Ok, between a few threads here where I brought him up, and yesterday (Halloween) being his birthday, I figured, I wanted to start an appreciation thread to him. I know there are many people on here that are fans of the work he put out, and the kind of human being he was. He was one of the rare stars of Hollywood, that it's basically impossible to hear a bad word said about him. He was a kind soul and a talented performer, who could make you laugh, but ever so rarely make you cry too. He left us way too soon, but man did he leave a big mark behind, and a wealth of content to entertain people to this day. Apparently Toronto named yesterday John Candy day as it would have been his 70th birthday. The man really took advantage of his luck at fame, to spread happiness and laughter, and to that I'll always be thankful to him. I feel lucky that I got to grow up, when he was alive and I think that helped to really make me be the fan of his that I am. He was also the first celebrity death, that I really understood, hey they're gone, and also the first celebrity death that made me sad to learn about. If I had to pick a favorite movie, out of all the classics he put out, for me it'd have to be Uncle Buck. And it's funny, I have a friend who's wife is originally from Jamaica and he said the first John Candy movie she ever saw was Uncle Buck, so to her, he's not John Candy, he's Uncle Buck. But it's fitting, because Candy's daughter even said, of all his roles, Buck was the one that was basically her dad. And the final part I wanted to put is, a part of an article the Toronto Star posted last year with the 25 anniversary of his passing:
The police presence in Toronto echoed the events of Candy's actual funeral, held in Los Angeles, where California highway patrolmen stopped all traffic along a 30-kilometre (18-mile) stretch of Highway 405 until the funeral procession had passed. "We were all so shocked, we were laughing and cheering and crying," Catherine O'Hara recalled. "But that's how people felt about John. I remember, as we were driving by, seeing this guy get out of his car to argue with the cop. But when the officer told him what was going on, he just smiled and waved and got back in his car. "People just loved John. And he loved them back. He was the kindest, sweetest, gentlest, most generous soul."

John Candy had some great classic movies Summer Rental, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Great Outdoors, the small scene in National Lampoons Vacation as the security guard. Could watch his stuff all the time. His humor was great. Even his bad movies were enjoyable. Can't really pick a favorite and he worked with some that could really make him shine in certain roles.

Cady was in seemingly EVERY 80's comedy. He low-key steals the show in Stripes.

I'm surprised nobody brought up his role as the Walley World security guard in National Lampoon's Vacation.
Or how could we not appreciate his role as Gus Polinski Polka King of the Midwest in Home Alone

Every now and then I like to go back on YouTube and watch the channel launch of Canadian channel YTV. They got Candy to host the entire launch. Good nostalgia.

Anyone see Canadian Bacon? It's the only non documentary by Michael Moore starring John Candy in one of his last roles.

I always thought it would have been a nice in during "Home Alone" instead of the polka band that it was Del giving the mom a ride to Chicago.

Anyone see Canadian Bacon? It's the only non documentary by Michael Moore starring John Candy in one of his last roles. Yeah, I enjoyed the movie. The premise is just so goofy, America trying to start a cold war with Canada. And it's funny having John Candy, as the patriotic sheriff, buying into it, and seeing Canada as the enemy. It was cool, back when I was in high school, I went to Niagara Falls with my parents, and we went in the tunnels behind the falls, and when you get off the elevators, there were some pictures, and one of them, was John Candy with some tour guides from when he filmed the movie.

This thread is awesome. There's a reason Uncle Buck was always on TV, he was that good. He had such a natural, unforced humour that was just so damn clever. Always gets me, but I definitely need to see more of his movies. I was just a little too young to see a lot more of his work. Nice tribute in this post, all great clips shared. Thanks everyone!
