Chris Columbus has said a few times over the years that he looks at Home Alone 2 as a remake and he prefers Part 2 over the first one. I think if he had his way he would have found away to get Candy in the movie. He loved working with on the first one and on Only the Lonely.

Although John Williams reused a lot of his themes from Home Alone into Home Alone 2 Well to the general audience it's not. Columbus says he considers it a remake. But at the same time he cut an aftershave scene from part 2 that was similar to the scene in the first one just so people wouldn't think they were seeing the same movie. I also think he prefers the second one over the first because Hughes wasn't breathing down his neck. He had more freedom.

Hopefully one day they can restore the full cut.I'd buy it in a heartbeat A fully restored cut probably won't ever happen. His family is against it. Why doesn't the family want it to happen? My only guess would be because the movie is perfect as is. I think the footage that didn't make it kind of makes Del look worse for all the freeloading. Plus it didn't seem to be as funny or interesting as what made it in the movie. As a kid I always was fascinated by two big guy actors-John Candy and George Wendt. They looked like my uncle though George Wendt is almost identical. But whatever either guy was in I wanted to watch it because I enjoyed them. That 6 minute interview posted earlier was pretty great. It looked like John was "living the life" in that footage and by that I mean, happy marriage and family and living a quiet lifestyle away from Hollywood or New York. From what I saw, the house wasn't huge though the property had a lot of land. I think it's silly to have a house with 20 rooms, 10 bathrooms that never get used but are purchased just to say you have it. A guy like John Candy seems to be something out of another time and I guess we didn't get to have him very long. Also it sucks he only got $414 for Home Alone even though he could have gotten more with the box office share. I like a few John Hughes movies but he seemed a little odd in the extra on Planes, Trains...where he, Candy and Steve Martin were answering press questions. He seemed pretty uncomfortable being in that type of environment. I guess he was a guy who kept to himself and that's probably why his movies were so good, he put everything he had into them. John Candy seemed to the most comfortable in the q&a, both on stage and backstage while Steve Martin also seemed a bit uptight but less so than John Hughes, like John Hughes just wanted to get it over with.

His daughter did an interview about it a few years back and basically said because he wasn't here to do it himself, it would feel like someone else's movie. And if it's true what Hughes said that the some of the footage was possibly damaged to where you couldn't use it, it becomes "well do we edit the picture to include what we have or should cut other stuff as well because maybe a key plot point was missed in a scene that can no longer be used". I think you can definitely restore what is there and release it as bonus feature on a home video release. Hughes definitely wasn't a fan of being in the spotlight. He saved his best scripts for himself to direct though that's for sure. He did have a formula to his writing. A lot of stuff he wrote had to do with travel and vacations (National Lampoons Vacation, Great Outdoors, Dutch, PTA, Home Alone). Maybe PTA is the best of those because he did it himself.

I heard that he was suppose to be in Dutch. Hard to imagine anyone but Ed O'Neil in the role. I'm sure Candy would have been brilliant because he can do anything.

Everytime i see John Candy I get a bit emotional because he was such a loveable guy and ive seen most movies that he was in. Perhaps one that doesnt get mentioned is Summer rental that I always enjoyed. So sad he passed away at such a young age.

This one is true about John Candy and Dutch. He was already attached to do Nothing But Trouble, but even if there wasn't a scheduling conflict I think he would have turned Dutch down. It's just too similar to PTA. And we were talking earlier about the cut footage from PTA, but man what I would give to see the cut footage from Nothing But Trouble.

Anyone ever see John Candy's performance in Career Opportunities as the Target Store Manager?

I am watching The Great Outdoors right now, I've probably watched about 10 times and I guess this thread has me doing so again. A few takeaways are I'm shocked Dan Aykroyd got the top billing. I know Ghostbusters was a big hit but John Candy was by far the main attraction. I wonder why this happened or if it were a wrestling production maybe it was a "rib" on John. Also I'm surprised how close in age both actors are. Dan looked his age but John Candy looked to be about 10 years older than him. I guess it really goes to show you that he always had that "uncle" persona about him. Even in PTA and Uncle Buck he was probably portrayed about being 10 years older.
Edit: I'm at the end of the movie and man was "Roman" a piece of crap, from beginning to end except for when he rescued his daughters.

You could tell he appreciated his fans so much.Such a down to earth good person. Really can tell the type of person a celebrity is, by the way they treat their fans. You could tell he loved to entertain and he clearly appreciated that fans enjoyed his work. And man, it's amazing to think, he's one of those cases, of one instance changing his coarse in life. If he hadn't injured his knee, today we might know John Candy as the football player and not the actor.

Space Balls was the first John Candy movie I loved, though it was a supporting role as Barf. The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck along with Home Alone are what come to mind when I think of him. His part in Home Alone is one of the best things about the film. I liked those movies as a kid, and I still like them today. Comedy and movie gold.

One of my favourite scenes with him was in Uncle Buck with the washing machine. "YOU'RE GONNA TAKE MY LOAD WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT!"
It just never fails to make me laugh - he died the year I was born, but he's definitely one of my favourite comedy actors. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is my favourite film he did - it's just fantastic.

I just watched Armed and Dangerous last night and it was hysterical. It didn't get good reviews or performed well at the box office. John Candy being paired with Eugene Levy was a great combination.

I definitely think it's one of his most underrated works. I love that movie, and the chemistry he has with Levy is great. So many good scenes in the movie, this being one of my favorites Course it cuts out the funny line, 'so what are you hauling?' 'Rocket fuel!'
