The French Angel looks like his head is from Stonehenge.

I actually really like that backing card, including the art. It's something a little different but is a nice touch. I personally don't care for all of the CGI renderings of wrestlers on all of the new retro cards, so the illustrations are a welcome change and feel like they could've been done 30 years ago. Yeah I think I agree with you actually….certainly has a bit more character for me. I wonder what the deal is with companies not using actual pictures... I definitely prefer the cartoon style artwork that Rush are going for than the CGI renderings of Chella and ZST, it's one thing that kind of helps me be a loose collector. The best card I've seen so far is the blue Hayabusa, though, I just wish it wasn't a CGI Hayabusa. Just a small gripe 🤷

Just a small gripe 🤷 My assumption has been that they don't have the rights to publicity photos of the talent in their prime as the figures represent - I think Aldis had a real photo but everything since with Chella has been an illustration; an approach that ZST seems to have copied. Not sure why Mattel went that route with the recent bundle given they have access to the WWE photo archive, but the independent companies probably don't have much choice. I like that Rush have put a twist on it, but then I'm not going to be a completist on these so my caring isn't as strong as it would be with Chella for example.

Thanks for that, I had a feeling about this being a legal thing, I've just never really known. It does seem odd that they can make a figure in the person's likeness but not present a picture of them on the card. I wonder if it's possible to use a picture of the wrestler that isn't owned by, say WWE? I know AEW have been using the NJPW footage/pictures of Owen Hart in their promotion of the Owen Hart Cup, for instance. Really good point about the Mattel retros, that is strange.

Do you just mean digital art because for all we know, the rush ones were drawn digitally too. The rush ones just look bad though. The artist isn’t very talented. I’m relieved that the my changed the art that’s gonna be in the front of the cards.

The Rush ones are done by a comic book artist whose name I seem to be forgetting right now without using Google, but I've seen his work before. All comes down to opinion, really, but I'd easily put the Rush artwork over both Chella and ZST which both just feel lazy. Rush at least went for something different, and if you're gonna do an illustration, it might as well be an obvious illustration rather than a weird computer generated version of what is trying to be an as realistic representation as they can get. I'm sure the Rush artist uses a computer, but I'd be surprised if the actual artwork wasn't done by hand before being cleaned up later, he's worked on a lot of titles I've heard of.

I think you have some misconceptions about the artistic process that goes into those graphics on the zst and chella cards. Sure they start with a photograph but they’re not simply applying photo editing filters. The rush art also starts with a photograph where upon the artist traces over it not very different than the other two. You’re entitled to like what you like though. I just don’t think the artist rush is using is very talented. I also assumed that zst and chella were attempting to replicate the art work on the mattel legends figures.

I get that, I don't assume that they're just adding filters to a photograph, but the effect is overdone, imo. By lazy, I just mean they're both going for the same exact thing, both Chella and ZST, the same thing Mattel is doing with the retros. Rush are using a genuine comic book artist whose work features in many well-known titles from Godzilla to Jurassic Park, Jeff Zornow. Like I said, it's obviously all personal opinion, but he's definitely got talent. Either way, they're going for something different while Chella and ZST are following on from Mattel's own strange design. As another poster said, Mattel surely have access to the actual picture library and so don't really need to use mock-up illustrations. I just appreciate the fact that Rush are trying something else, but ultimately, my cardbacks go in the bin anyway, although I'll keep them if they're nice enough, like the blue Hayabusa card, or the Jay White cards. You know what they say, though, different strokes and all that. 👌

Those look great, the variants are excellent as well, Roadblock looks good.
I'd like to see the actual figures if possible, but depending on funds, I'm gonna consider picking Larry up.

Order placed! I was a little surprised at the shipping price of $12.00 from Assylum but I still pulled the trigger. Ultimately I went with the red or maroon trunks on Larry.
