I recently just watched all of the Nightmare on Elm street movies. They honestly do not hold up. I don’t have a problem with them being old, I just think the stories for most of them are boring. Freddy is also kind of a bitch that easily gets bamboozled by children. Are there any die hard Nightmare on Elm street fans that can explain if I’m missing something in seeing the appeal? The problem with the series is they struck gold with the first film and then decided to beat the idea into the ground. Pretty quickly it became obvious that they wanted to cash in on Freddy as a character and didn’t really care about the actual story as much as they cared about pumping out movies. I love the first and have a soft spot for part 3/4. Part 2 is wildly considered one of the most homoerotic horror movies made, which makes it a fun watch. Part 5 and Freddys Dead are complete garbage which nothing redeemable about them. New Nightmare returns to appeal of the first film and takes it to another direction. I love Freddy vs Jason because it’s a lot of fun. The remake sucks so hard. The appeal at the end of the day though is people just like seeing Freddy, whether what surrounds him is good or bad. If you have the time, there’s a documentary about the Nightmare series called Never Sleep Again which dives into each film and the making of them. Someone actually uploaded it to YouTube. Okay, thanks. This makes me feel better. I thought I was just being a cynical bunghole.

The problem with the major 4 (Freddy/Jason/Michael/Leatherface) is that non of them have a cohesive story throughout their films. New writers and directors each films muddies the waters and gives us a lot of garbage. Some are fun. Some are so bad it’s not funny. That’s why I love the Chucky series. Since the first film to the television series, it’s been one long story that doesn’t really go off the tracks too much.

Though, I did think Tommy Jarvis was an interesting character. Michael Myers is probably my favorite out of the characters you listed. Aside from the Rob Zombie versions, I don’t have any real criticism for those movies.

Parts 6 and 7 are fun though. With Michael, I love the Laurie Strode timelines. No interest in part 4-6 or the Zombie versions. Resurrection blows too.

re: Nightmare on Elm Street
I just assumed unless they have the duo of Wes Craven & Heather Langenkamp attached they're awful. Freddy running around and terrorizing a pool party sounds like something that should be rock bottom but it was still only Part II by that point.

Then they leaned heavily onto the comedy making Freddy essentially Bugs Bunny. Which Freddy shouldn’t be a likable character. Dude murdered children. He should be pure evil.

For A Nightmare On Elm Street it's kind of a double edge sword for me. I really like 3, and it's probably my favorite of the series but what it did was also the downfall for the series. From 3 onward, people just wanted wisecrackin' Freddy to kill some teens and have one liners. Overall I liked 1,3, and Freddy's Dead. 2 was ok, but I hated Dream Master, Dream Child, and New Nightmare.
And someone brought up Hellraiser, and my God was there a bigger crashing of a franchise than Hellraiser? Comparing the big horror franchises it's definitely has the most bad films in a series. There's ten and only 1 is great and part 2 is good visually, questionable story and the rest are just bad. They made money though so you gotta keep churning them out. I am really interested to see how this remake turns out. I'm typically against remakes but it can't get any worse than what they put out already with this franchise.

Looking like we won’t see a new Friday The 13th any time soon. With the lawsuit officially over, the only way we get more Jason is if the two sides work together and that’s not likely.

In the run up to Scream on Thursday, I've been rewatching the series.
I really wish that with the new 4K release of the original that came out a while ago they added the scenes that were cut to get the R rating back into the movie.
I mean I can see the uncut footage on YouTube and with today's standards for movie violence it's nothing.

I only saw the first Scream trailer and forgot it came out so soon. I honestly love that because I have no idea what to expect and that’ll help me enjoy the movie more.

Yeah the older I get, the less I want to watch trailers just so I can be surprised.

I went to see Scream last night. It was alright. They don't give enough screentime to most of the newer characters so you don't really care if they die or not.
You can definitely tell that Wes Craven or Kevin Williamson didn't have anything to do with thr story.

I went to see Scream last night and thought it was pretty good. I might see it again to see if I can catch all the little Easter eggs in it from the previous films that I didn't catch.

Woah, haven't logged on here in AGES. There's 3 Official Horror Threads now? Looks like some progress have been made.
Anyone else excited for the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix? I feel like there's a shot that it's good. Tone seems right.
