If I owned a MOC chase I’d want as many others opened, think about it.

Why would someone get annoyed at what someone else does with their own figures?
Plenty of other things to worry about.

This monetary entitlement is the reason that snake oil salesman Jeremy Padawar can put out such limited releases. If the value of an item ten years from now means more to you than the enjoyment of owning the item. Then you're not a collector, you're an investor. No surprise he's so fond of Pokemon cards.

No surprise he's so fond of Pokemon cards. people can both collect AND invest. i personally don't care about resale value for my collection, but if i found a rare figure in store...yea, i'd probably buy it to sell/trade later on

One can definitely be both. I played a lot of MTG in late high school/early college. I ended up paying for an entire year of schooling and rent through flipping cards , but at the same time still loved collecting for myself and playing the game. Likewise some cards I loved owning but let go of because the price point had just gotten so high that the thrill of owning said card no longer outweighed the benefit of selling it. I also bought cards on speculation purely to sell when they went up. Similarly dumped cards that were about to tank. Does that make me satan? Maybe. Rest assured if I can ever find a chase MJF at a price point I'm willing to pay (I live in a smaller city in Canada. We have 3 walmarts, but we sure aren't getting AEW figures shipped here lol) that guy is getting opened instantly. If he ever drove up to a price point I'd be willing to sell again, he'd sell for a good amount loose anyways.

For sure you can be both, but you have to make the distinction that what your selling isn't what you're buying for yourself but in the back of your mind to sell. I've bought stuff loose that I know I can flip, but I've never bought it for my own collection and sold it later on. To buy something and put it in your collection to sell it later on isn't collecting.

but I've never bought it for my own collection and sold it later on. To buy something and put it in your collection to sell it later on isn't collecting. If that's the intent, I agree. Buying something with the intent of selling is investing. It is entirely possible however to be collecting things, and later on decide to sell them because they've become so valuable you can't really justify keeping them. That doesn't mean they were an investment or that you weren't a collector. It just means there was an offer you couldn't refuse.

If I walked into WalMart or Target and found a chase that I wanted I would buy it and open it. I am a collector not an investor. And if I found a chase of someone I didn’t want I would leave it on the RVD for someone who did. I don’t buy things that I don’t want in my collection unless it is part of a 2-Pack with someone I do want or a bogo sale and there’s not two figures I do want.

I've bought stuff loose that I know I can flip, but I've never bought it for my own collection and sold it later on. To buy something and put it in your collection to sell it later on isn't collecting. Every collection I've ever had has turned out to be temporary. I get into something for a few years, really enjoy it, and then drift away to something else. Right now I'm slowly selling off choice pieces of a board game collection that was very important to me 4 years ago. So every purchase I make has some consideration towards one day selling, and selling something doesn't invalidate it as being an awesome part of the collection. Nothing lasts forever. Doesn't stop me from opening figures... but I don't think I could bring myself to open one of these chases. Loose figures don't look that much better to me than MOC.

The gatekeeping of what "collecting" is in this thread...geez. People have different motivations in life. Get over it. Especially when we're talking about 6 inches of plastic men in speedos.
