Unlike most, I'll wait for more facts before I get in an uproar.
IF it's just a WWE name/licensing thing, then I get it. It's no different than Disney telling Johnny Depp he can't be Jack Sparrow in a car commercial. Or when NFL players do sponsorships and they wear those close but not quite right jerseys. I even heard that NFL players with Twitch are not allowed to show the NFL logo or the team logos in them. Whether or not that's true, I dunno. But at least we know what Renee had to say, so I feel better now.

This is really a complete non story and people who are throwing a fit over it simply just dont understand legalities. All Vince is saying is you cant use your stage name that HE owns to make money for yourself. This is common sense. But once again, its 2020 and Vince is bad man so we must hate everything he do cause we are elite now. He doesn’t own everybody’s name. Allan Jones was AJ Styles before wwe and will be after he leaves. Vince has been bad way before this year.

So a few things after listening to observer.
Meltzer thinks Wwe could be starting their own platform similar to cameo etc.
He also mentioned that UFC at one point had to do the same thing because some of their fighters were working with advertisers that were competition to sponsors of the UFC, so they had to step in. Could just be a wait and see thing.

Allan Jones can use AJ Styles to make money (assuming he still owns the name) but he cant use AJStyles_WWE because then he's promoting himself under the WWE banner, at which point WWE has legal rights to a percentage. Just as Marino said above, the NFL has been doing this for year. Sports cards are the same way. If you look at many draft pick cards you'll notice college logos are removed so they dont have to pay any fees for the rights.

You know, for independant contractors, they sure seem like employees. Or rather, they are controlled like employees. Maybe the money these independent contractors make from Cameo, Twitch, or social media would help them pay for health insurance, airfare, rental cars, hotels, etc. Those could also provide them a financial cushion since VKM's "sports entertainers" aren't protected form discrimination or workplace safety laws. I say that, but someone will still defend the company and throw some passive aggressive shade my way. lol

Sponsorship things & rights fees are a big deal. I remember plenty of times having to cover up nike logos, etc on my shorts and whatnot if they weren't the official sponsor for a big meet. That was just for track meets in a country that really doesn't care about it as a sport, nevermind a huge money making endeavor.

I just wonder how someone like AJ Styles - who has used that name his entire life, which I am guessing he owns the rights to - will do in regards of this?? I can see if it's a WWE name for example - Seth Rollins - since WWE came up with that name. But with the likes of guys who are using their real name or their owned wrestling name they've had for years, I can't see how this is gonna work for them.

It may depend on the terms of their contract. Some wrestlers sign over their pre-existing ring name to WWE, but that seems pretty rare. The only example I can think of is the Dudleys.

Not the best worded statement, but from what I understand some talent confirmed it's just the WWE names that aren't allowed.

In the case of the Dudleys ecw owned that name, but Paul let those guys use it when they went to wwe. When wwe bought ecw's assets and trademarks, the Dudleys names came with that because Paul E signing over those names to Mark Lomanico and Devon Hughes wasn't official. Actually nothing was signed I don't think. He just ok'd them to use the names. The Dudleys did say in an interview that he sold them down the river.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Vince to just require the talent to promote the product through their streams or cameos? That way the company is benefiting off of talent using third party services while still keeping them happy? Even if it was just some pre written sponsor ad to push merchandise or remind their audience to join the network, it would benefit both sides.

It sounds to me that they don't have a problem with talent using their image to make extra money, just that the WWE isn't getting a cut.

WWE-affiliated sponsor ads on independent channels would be problematic on the same stream where the performer can badmouth the company or coworkers (like AJ Styles has done with Heyman), or if they ever use offensive language (like Orton has). Keeping the performer and TV character separate seems safer.

That clip is from probably my favorite ever episode of RAW where they looked all over for Austin. Incredible television.
