OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators have traded winger Peter Schaefer to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran winger Shean Donovan.

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired Matt Cullen from the New York Rangers.

In return, the Hurricanes have sent Andrew Hutchinson, Joe Barnes and a third round pick in the 2008 to New York. Cullen notched 16 goals and 41 points in 80 games with the Rangers last season. He returns to the comforts of a Hurricane team that he won the Stanley Cup with in 2006. As a third-line center in Carolina, he collected 25 goals and 49 points. Look for 20+ goals this season from the veteran center.

I'll miss Cullen, but this was a move that needed to be made. Now, Avery and Hossa will be re-signed and Dubinsky likely becomes our 3rd line center.

I'm glad that Cullen was traded. Obviously the Rangers needed cap space. I also felt like for the amount of time he played and for the players on his line, he was pretty useless.

With the trade, the Rangers have cleared up $2.4 million in cap space.

There's rumors circulating that Peca might end up going to the Rangers, as well, which would make sense now that we have room for him with Cullen being dealt.

Even though Matty was a good hard-nosed player, I really don't mind seeing him gone at all. As was stated before, the Rangers needed cap space for Avery and Hossa. I'm not quite sure at the moment who will take the role as the third line center with Prucha and Callahan. The easy answer would be to say Betts, but that breaks up a fourth line with chemistry up the yin yang. I'd like to see Immonen or Dawes...but we'll see.

The Rangers already announced that Immonen is playing outside of America this year, I think in Finland. Also, Dawes is a LW and the Rangers wouldn't convert him to a center right now. They only way he was going to make the team was if Avery or Hossa don't come back, but now it looks like they both will.

Dubinsky is probably the favorite to win the spot right now, but I can also see them getting Peca if it doesn't cost them that much.

I will be shocked if the rangers have enough money to sign Avery, Hossa and Peca. Highly unlikely so don't get your hopes up.

Honestly, I don't really want Peca. I'd rather give Dubinsky or Anisimov a shot as our 3rd line center.

I can see Avery getting around $2 million, and then the rest going to Hossa if he's willing to return for that amount. If not, then his roster spot is easily replaceable.

I only want Peca if they can get Avery and Hossa re-signed. Peca has always been an underrated player. He can do a lot of things on both sides of the ice.

Brodie DuPont also strikes me as a possibility for a good third line center. He has 149 points in 214 games with the Calgary Hitmen. He's got good size at 6'2, 205 and is 20 years old. A good training camp could lead to possibilities for the kid.
