I think Tanaka ends up with the Mariners. I could see them blowing everyone out the water again. Yanks, Cubs, Sox, Diamondbacks will probably aggressively pursue him but I think he signs w/Seattle.

The Yankees won't be blown out of the water with Tanaka. The Yankees let Cano go because a 10 year deal for a 31 year old was asinine and we've learned our lesson from the Alex Rodriguez deal. If the Yankees REALLY wanted him they would have had him, and he offered to take less to stay with the Yankees, just not low enough for the Yankees to bite. Masahiro Tanaka is only 25. I could see the Yankees offering him a 7 year deal worth $140 million.

He might wanna stay with Iwamura, closer to home etc. Seattle could also offer him insane money too, which wouldnt be too far off from the Yankos. Mariners are my #1 pick, Yankos #1A, Cubs/DBacks sneaky

So...yeah...I see the Pirates do not want a playoff run this season... I would say they are doing better than the Reds this offseason. So far, I have the Braves, Cardinals and Dodgers as the NL Division winners and Nationals and Pirates as the 2 Wild Cards. Their starting rotation worries me. It does not look like AJ is coming back. They are holding onto hope that Liriano does not return to his old, injury prone form, that any combo of Locke/Cumpton/Volquez do not suck and that Wandys arm does not come flying off like a windmill when he throws that first fastball. They have not sured up their bullpen. Who sets up? It certainly should not be Melancon. It will be Melancon, but it should not be. "Oh he made the All Star game last year so there is hope he will get better." Yeah, well he and AJ pretty much single handedly cost the Pirates a shot at the pennant. AJ deserves a second chance though. Melancon does not. So if they smarten up, they let The Gangster (Hughes) set up. But again, I doubt it. Snyder will be starting in the outfield...yikes. Flabby "Dirty" Sanchez is starting at 1B. Insta-death for any team forced to start him beyond being a platoon player. Oh, and no worries. We still do not have a short stop. We have a Barmes. Lulz.

We had this discussion a while back, but here is the 1st guy that has admitted to not voting Greg Maddux into the Hall this year. Obviously none of us expected him to be unanimous but here is early confirmation. Still think he has a great shot at breaking Seaver's record. In the grand scheme of things he shouldn't be unanimous when Ruth, Aaron, etc weren't but it is all stupid to me. espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10259259/greg-maddux-unanimous-hall-selection

Maddux, Glavine, Thomas elected to the Hall. Great to see Glavine, Maddux, and Cox all elected in the same year. Big part of my childhood, I didn't miss a Braves game for a good stretch from 91-98 or so.

Biggio missed by TWO votes. Jacque Jones, Armando Benitez, Eric Gange, and J.T. Snow received at least 1 vote.

I wish Smoltz hadn't dragged out that last year because he could have been there with them. But I really want to find a way to Cooperstown this year to see them inducted.

They really need to change the way things like the Hall of Fame, MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the year awards are decided. These sports writers turn it into a game of spite, strategy and local politics and it really hurts the integrity of the awards and the game, as if the PED cloud didn't do enough damage already.
People who intentionally leave a guy off or don't vote for him on the first year because "nobody should unanimous" or "nobody should get in the first year". Well that's ridiculous. Once baseball players retire, their numbers don't change. There is nothing that is going to make a guy like Biggio, Mussina, Clemens, or Bonds MORE Hall of Fame worthy in the future. Their numbers ARW WHAT THEY ARE and they are NOT CHANGING. So I don't understand the justification that a lot of writers use that "oh, he's a Hall of Famer, just not THIS year".
They also need to up the limit of number of votes from 10, especially if people are going to WASTE them on people like Gagne, Benitez, Jones, and so on.
Bottom line, most of these writers are schmucks and don't deserve to decide something as important about another man's career and life.

Bottom line, most of these writers are schmucks and don't deserve to decide something as important about another man's career and life. As I understand it from some ESPN commentary today, the 10 votes is a maximum that a writer can vote for but the minimum is 0 and apparently many of the writers don't use all 10 of their votes. Personally, I agree with your points about the writers turning the HoF voting into a personal agenda. Of all the possible voter bases to use, why the baseball writers? Why not a large sampling of active and retired players and managers? Why not the fans? Or how about a combination of players, managers, fans and writers? Who did the baseball writers perform oral sex on so that they get 100% of the power in deciding who goes into the HoF?

Next year's inductees are probably Randy Johnson/Pedro Martinez/John Smoltz/Craig Biggio. Maybe Piazza?
