Its the years, 24 mil a year isnt bad for him, but 10 years is foolish.
If the Mariners can somehow snag a title, or a bunch of playoff appearances, then its worth it.
They flounder like the Rangers with A-Rod etc, its a disaster.

Good for Granderson and Cano getting the most money they can, but I just can't imagine playing baseball knowing that it's pointless and you have no chance. I just don't think I'd be able to play for teams that don't have a shot. Playing without the possibility to make the Playoffs or win a Title just seems like I'd be really unhappy. Unless you want to play and absolutely NOBODY wants you, which happens to mediocre and past their prime players, but if you could play for a team like Boston, Detroit, Dodgers, Braves, Tampa, St. Luis....why would you sign with a bad team just for the money?
I mean, yeah, anything can happen in 10 years....but the Mets aren't going to do ANYTHING in the 4 years of Granderson, and it could take a while for Seattle to turn into a Playoff team, so the prime years of Cano will probably be wasted and they'll start to get good right as he's declining and they'll never get their money's worth.
Oh well, baseball is a business and some people care about winning and some people care about money.

In the end, you are getting paid more than 99% earn in a lifetime to play a game. I imagine he won't have trouble sleeping at night, especially since he has already won a World Series. He would have been absolutely insane to turn down like 70 million extra just for the honor and privilege to play for the Yankees. he takes a 7 year deal, he probably doesn't get another contract after he finishes it.

Mets need to get lucky, but I think they can compete in 2015 if things go well
Harvey, Wheeler, Noah Syndergard.
The Mariners, need more. If they can land Price, and another bat AND if some of their youngsters progress....thats a playoff team.
I still think the Yankees are ahead of the Mariners in terms of "closer to the title" but lets be honest Yankee fans...you guys arent title threats just yet.
Damn well might be if you use the Cano money in a lot of places.

gonna miss Robbie Cano dontcha know but you know what? him, in the end its all about money anyway right? i hope he rots in mediocrity in Seattle, and i hope he really hates rain. why the mariners would do something like this is beyond me. but whatever. they are going to suck/be mediocre, for a long time. and a couple of great players will waste the rest of their careers there.

You never know when you sign those contracts. People said Pudge sold out by going to Detroit, but a few years later he was in the WS. Same thing was said about Jayson Werth when he went to the Nats. The first year he was there, the Nats finished .500 and the Phils won 100 games. But look how that deal has turned out for him now.

A few more bats and Seattle could be pretty good.

I think that's a big part of it. He already has his ring so he's content. He didn't strike me as ultra competitive where he's out to stack rings.

Yanks add Beltran for 3/45.
His bat will be helpful in the line up but there aren't enough DH spots for this roster.

The Beltran signing is stupid.
Beltran is going to be 37 in April, Granderson is only going to be 33 in March. I'd have rather had Granderson for 4 years than Beltran at age 40 in the 3rd year of this deal.
Granderson, at this point, is younger, faster, a better fielder, has more power, and his swing his built for that short right field pull shot at Yankee Stadium.
Beltran's knees will blow out now that the Yankees are overpaying him $15 million per year. Granderson got the same salary from the Mets, just an extra year.
Bottom line...the Yankees should have gone with Granderson unless they could have talked Beltran down to 2 years. Beltran for 3 years is stupid.

i dont understand why they just let Granderson walk without a blink. I know they made him the QO but still... this past season his "injuries" weren't because of his body, they were freak things.
maybe the Yanks are gonna move Soriano back to 2B??
So you have Ellsbury/Gardner/Beltran A-Rod/Jeter & Ryan/Soriano & Johnson/Teixeira

The Yankees know they can only play 3 OF's at once right?
Ichiro/****boy/Beltran with Soriano at the DH and Gardner traded?
I like Beltran a lot, but was there really a need?
Soriano, Ichiro and Wells have 0 trade value so unless you release them its gotta be Gardner who goes

I read that they dont want to trade Gardner. I dunno why they would. He's a solid player, and him & elsbury could be ridiculous anchoring the offense. maybe they want to move Soriano to 2b/DH
So their lineup is
Gardner - CF Elsbury - LF Beltran - Split time between DH/RF A-Rod - 3B Jeter - SS Soriano - 2B Teixeira - 1B McCann - C
Then Ichiro splits RF/DH Wells RF/DH Kelly Johnson 2B/DH/3B/1B Brendan Ryan backup SS Cervelli backup C
It's like they are gonna try the mix and match approach. play whoever is hot at what position they can, and rotate the DH as needed. as long as they have production, what does it matter I guess

I think 2 of those 4 have to go.
Soriano had a real strong second half last year which should keep him around. I think Wells goes either way.

Soriano at 2B could very well be the worst decision of all time. Guy can barely play the OF. But move him back to a position he hasnt played in 10 years?
Cashman is smarter than this

Soriano's last meaningful term at 2B was in 2005 with the Rangers.
He has played a total of 4 games there since. He has played mostly OF in his career

full time DH it is!
i guess the Yankees plans are to snatch up all the big bats out in free agency to fill the void left by robbie
well, except Napoli cuz he's back in boston
