Enjoy Ellsbury Yankee fans, 110 games of speed until he gets older.
I hope this costs the Yankees Cano.
Thanks for the two World Series Jacoby

So Ellsbury has signed with the Yanks for a ridiculous amount of both time and money. And here I thought the Yankees learned about obscene contracts after the Rodriguez debacle and essentially telling Cano to off. I see I was wrong about that.

Well I hope it costs them Cano but I agree, probably wont.
Ellsbury was one of my least favorite Red Sox.
He was constantly hurt, he was a puss when he got hurt and avoided the team, he had that 1 great year that is a total outlier to his career, he is a speed guy that wont age well.
I am not sad at all with this, I am glad its Jackie Bradley Jr time.

For the next 2-3 years he should be worth his contract, as long as hes healthy. He still has great speed and instincts and I think Yankee field or whatever its called will be good for him.
His arm is worse than Johnny Damons and probably should be a LF with a better CF already there but no way they do that.

Hmm, Passan and Heyman said they're still in on Beltran and Choo.
Fascinating. Don't know what the Yankees are doing but I like it so far (as long as Cano comes back)

Beltran just doesnt make sense, I mean he does if you wanna play him at DH or Soriano strictly at DH.
Choo just signed with the Tigers, so cross tat off

I'm fine with the deal considering the other options, although I would have taken Beltran at 3 years but that's understandably a year too much.
This is free agency, everyone. There hardly is a deal out there that is ever really fair. This is what the Yankees do.

I'll say the same thing about Ellsbury that I did about McCann...I'll worry about years 5,6 and 7 for Ellsbury when we get there just like I'll worry about years 4 and 5 with McCann when we get there.
Contracts this long always have the possibility to bite you on the ass at the end, especially if the player declines fast, but both players should be in their prime for the next 3-4 years. The only thing we have to worry about is injuries. McCann has had some injuries, and historically when Ellsbury gets injured he's done for the year, so it's something to keep in the back of our minds and cross our fingers and hope they stay healthy.
Either way, it's good to see the Yankees showing some balls. After that insulting winter last offseason of refusing to make any moves and trying to patch the team with 1 year deals and bench players and past-their-prime veterans, at least the Yankees are showing their fan base that they are willing to spend, they are trying to win, and that they aren't just going to field a cheap team and expect their fans to pay top dollar for a clearly NOT top dollar product, like last year.
I'm sure eventually they'll get Cano back, and I hope they sign Tanaka...after that, everything else is a bonus.
1. Masahiro Tanaka - Maybe 2. CC Sabathia 3. Ivan Nova 4. Hiroki Kuroda - Maybe 5. David Phelps/Michael Pineda
(In no particular batting order, just by position) C - Brian McCann 1B - Mark Teixeira 2B - Robinson Cano - Probably 3B - A-Rod, or Nunez if A-Rod is suspended SS - Derek Jeter/Brendan Ryan CF - Ellsbury/Gardner LF - Ellsbury/Gardner RF - Ichiro DH - Alfonso Soriano (can play some OF to provide rest for other players)
IF they get back Cano and are able to get Tanaka...really all the Yankees would have to do is just figure out 3B once they know what's up with A-Rod's suspension or not, and then maybe add an arm or 2 to the bullpen and I'd be happy with that team.

Also, the argument the Yankees keep loading themselves with these albatross contracts is a moot point because those contracts never, ever keep them from spending when they have the money.
You can argue if that strategy is wise but it's never really prevented them from getting a player they need/want to acquire.

Yanks ink Kelly Johnson to 1 year deal. Love it, great bench guy with 20 HR potential.

Yanks ink Kelly Johnson to 1 year deal. Love it, great bench guy with 20 HR potential. Cano insurance. And to say the Yankees still spend even though they make crazy deals isnt always true. They were quiet after the Tex/CC deals, they went a few years without anything massive and if Ellsbury prevents them from letting Cano go, it wouldnt work either. I think McCann was a necessity, and they were going to overpay for him regardless.

He's Cano insurance but he's also a guy they could plug in at 3B and even the corner OF spots.
Bye bye Nunez. Should've traded you for Cliff Lee. Sob.
