Probably an attempt to free up money for Cabrera and Scherzer, unless they're still on the hook for some of his contract.

They need to free up some money, and his production has been declining. As Demolition stated, Scherzer is a FA next season and a Boras client I think. Cabrera still has a few yrs left, but it is something that is coming up. I think Verlander's salary jumps up to nearly $30M also this season.
Not a bad move for Detroit really all things considering.

Francesa is as arrogant as they come but he knows his crapand he's an excellent interviewer, he really covered everything with the A-Rod.

Sometimes he gets stupid callers who don't know anything, but other times callers will call with good points and he'll just tear them apart for having a differing opinion.

I just read the re-cap of the A-Rod/Francessa thing.....
I'm glad ESPN, etc. are actually doing the right thing and reporting that. Considering they were the first ones to slam the guy after everything that goes on. Now I understand his character and his "aura" bring on this drama. He absolutely is a drama king. HOWEVER....when he's accused of this stuff, it spreads like wildfire and no one even bothers to just ASK him.
So why not deny it at the time? "It's just never been my style. I've taken the approach I'm going to put my head down and play baseball. I get too much attention as it is. I know there's a lot of people that don't like me and there's a lot of supporters. In an ironic way, what's happened over the last six months is the best thing that ever happened in my career. It's humanized me. People are coming to my defense, even people who say, 'I hate your guts, but what Major League Baseball is doing to you is flat-out disgusting.'"
A-Rod might be the smartest athlete ever. He is managing to turn his PR image around by acting RIGHT, among all this bullshit, and he's actually coming off NOT as a pompus douche but as a guy who really just wants to play baseball and be done with it. Considering the YANKEES were the ones who gave him the awful contract, that is all I want from the guy.....just play the game, get your hits, and retire so it can all be done. At least he wants to earn his money, not just collect. Because through this whole ordeal one of the things he's always gone back to is "I just want to play baseball, I want to be on the field with my team"
I am loving how this whole saga is turning out.

My dad used to listen to them all the time, I was pretty young when they were on together and didn't listen all that frequently. I've just been getting into sports talk radio within the past couple of years. I actually met Russo at a dog park, our dogs played together for a bit, pretty cool.

Loved Maddog, he's a big Yankees hater but he was fun to tease. Plus he gave us one of the most legendary sport rants ever:

Let's not kid ourselves here. A-Rod isn't being singled out because of who he is or because of his salary. He's being singled out because he's a cheater who has been caught several times and hasn't even tried to hide it in the past. You get caught with PEDs and you then proceed to thumb your nose at everyone by continuing to hang out with known steroid dealers? Really? That is why he's being singled out. If anything he's getting tons of leeway because of who he is. If he was some marginal player hitting .240/10/60 and warming the bench more than playing, he'd be gone already.
I will give him credit for having stones. Given his history, he's most likely guilty as sin. I have no idea what evidence the MLB has. I'm going assume it's reasonably strong. A-Rod's got stones for sure. Selig however is completely spineless. The MLB here will likely fail to do any disciplinary action at all and will thus send the message that the MLB is so pissed off over PEDs that there are NO consequences if you get caught using them multiple times.

Only Selig could actually make one of the biggest douches in baseball history look sympathetic. I think that he should be there to testify. The steroid era occurred during his watch. Ultimately, he is responsible.

Regardless of right or wrong with A-Rod, and he thinks hes doing what is right and thats fine, but his situation or lack there of is probably handcuffing the Yankees from making moves. We shall see if they lose anyone because of the uncertainty of what is going on with him. He is gonna get suspended, he just needs to get it over with and not hold the Yankees hostage but then again, why does he care?

Ultimately, he is responsible. Interestingly enough, the commissioner has NEVER testified at an arbitration hearing like this ever. I can kind of see why Selig isn't testifying here. There's really no precedent for it. I still think Selig is spineless and nutless and has no business leading anything at all.

Boomer and Carton made an interesting point this morning.
A-Rod is so irate in this meeting that he storms out, yet he is composed enough to stop for the media on the way and deliver this perfectly worded statement.

Eh, Yankees have about $75-$85M to spend, yeah A-Rod's suspension can give them another $31Mish to spend...but this idea they won't be able to sign anyone because of A-Rod's deal is dumb
