My buddy reminded me of this when watching Mania last night. We were talking about the Miz's promo when he was talking about Bundy's dropoff from Wrestlemania 2 to Wrestlemania 3. Then my buddy said there was one evern worse than that.
How about Randy Savage (RIP) going from winning the WWF championship at Wrestlemania 8 then the next year commentating at Wrestlemania 9?
Can someone give me the story on this? And what are everyones thoughts on this?

Vince thought he was finished as a top line superstar by this point I believe, only to be used sporadically to put over the "New Generation" superstars, but then Vince goes and put the belt on Hogan at WM9? WTF?
This was part of the reason Savage left the following year for WCW, as he wanted to continue to be used as a big name wrestler, not as a commentator which he did in WCW.

To be fair with Hogan, the ultimate goal was for him to put over Bret. They went about it in a dumb way, but they still wanted him to put over their next star. I don't see that as a drop off though, really. Yes, it would have been nice to see Savage still wrestling (especially since rumor has it he would have wrestled Bret), but he was semi retired as far as they were concerned, so at least he was doing something.

yeah theres a few good examples....
Savage is a great one of course.
Sgt Slaughter and Yoko both suffered the fate of defending titles at one Mania and being well in the undercard on the next....I know Yoko won the tag titles but still
Lex Luger fought for the title at WMX and was in the opening match at WMXI

Chriis Benoit and Eddie Guerrero are two other names not mentioned much. Both wreslted in world title matches at WM20, but Eddie was opening WM21 w/ Rey the next year while Benoit was thrown into the MITB match w/ five other mid-carders. Both were great matches, but both dropoffs none-the-less.

yeah all of those are shocking actually.
heres some more
Batista defended the WHC in a scorcher against taker at WM22,at WM23 he fought Umaga in the Raw vs SD! match which was a total filler.
also Rey Mysterio won the WHC at WM22......after missing 23 & 24 his next outing was a 21 second "outing" against JBL for the (now) worthless IC strap.

Macho Man again
WM4 & WM5 in the main event of both, WM6 stuck in mixed tag garbage with Sherri against Rhodes & Sapphire
Also Dibiase in the main event of WM4, stuck in a worthless match vs Brutus Beefcake at WM5

No one mention the Sarge??
Sgt Slaughter walks into Wrestlemania 7, Champion + main eventing vs Hogan. Wrestlemania 8 he's in a throw away 8 man tag match that didnt last more then 7 mins
Actually pretty similar to the Miz.

Bret Hart going from main eventing WM9 to opening WM10 with his brother Owen. But the good part is that was a GREAT wrestling match and the best WM opener ever.

Slaughter was a vehicle to give the belt back to Hogan. He was years past his prime and had no business in the main event of WM VII. Warrior/Savage should have been the main event for the title, not a retirement match.

You can't be in the world title match every year at Mania. It gets boring.
So really any other match would be considered a dropoff. As long as you are on the card, then you should be happy.

Not the biggest but one that always pissed me off. Steiners wrestle a great match against Headshrinkers at IX, NOT EVEN on the card at X. Not even a dark match which went to Bushwhackers vs. Heavenly Bodies. I'm kind of surprised they weren't involved in the 10-man tag team match
