I've been watching Stone Cold's "the Bottom Line on the Most Popular Superstar of All Time" DVD, and the title actually got me thinking. Especially because there's a ton of Rock segments and matches on there too.
Without a doubt these two could draw the biggest pops of the night where they went. They are the two biggest stars of the Attitude Era. They've main evented Wrestlemania twice together. They've both held the WWF title a number of times and are considered two of the greatest promo cutters in history. They're pretty damn good in the ring too. Who, in your opinion, was more over?
I personally have to go with Austin. There have been times where the crowd exploded for every thing he did. A great example of a hot crowd for Austin was Over the Edge 98, as Joker and I were discussing in the Classic Matches thread. Stone Cold was doing a ton of crazy sh*t in 1998 and the crowd ate it all up. Watching events from the time period (hell, even 03) the arenas are full of signs. Not denying Rock any credit, but Austin got reactions like nobody else.
Another example, as somebody will probably mention, return at Madison Square Garden where he helped Foley win the WWF title.
I vote Austin.

Austin.
now before I say anything else there is NO denying The Rocks MASSIVE popularity-no way no how.to say otherwise is lunacy.
but Austin was more popular.Rocks popularity reached its zenith when Austin was away for that year.they knew Austin was done after Fully Loaded 99 and started prepping Rock to take the reigns.Vince cleverly eased off on Austin because they knew the surgery was inbound.....and pushed Rock right up there.
but when Austin came back in Sept 00-he was THE guy again.theres proof too.the reactions for Austin are louder at
SSeries 2000 Armageddon 2000 RR2001 NWO2001(plus the crowd were devastated when he lost)
and then there was Backlash 2000.the MOMENT they said Austin would return to help Rock we want Austin chants dominated.....they screamed for him the ALL night at Backlash 2000.
and finally onto late 97 thru mid 99.the crowd went beserk for everything Austin did.look at the crowd reactiosn during those PPVs and on all the Raws.......its consistent beserker joy everytime the glass breaks and the curatin splits.
Rock was second......a close second mind you but still second.

Austin, and I honestly don't think it was even remotely close before Rock's recent return. Pretty sure Vince himself called Austin the most popular wrestler of all time.
Rock gained massive appeal when he stared doing movies. Not to say he wasn't the second biggest draw during the Attitude Era but he was definitely second at the time imo. Over time, his celebrity grew because of his Hollywood status, not for what he was doing in a wrestling ring, so I don't even know how to judge Rock in terms of popularity in 2012 as solely a pro wrestler because he hasn't been one for nearly a decade.
Had Rock never been an actor, I don't personally think we would even have to ask this question.

I am going with Austin. For me it started with the shoot promos from ECW. And then KOTR 96 was just crazy. He looked like a mad men after busting his lip pretty bad. But I would say he was move over then the Rock.

There isn't a single answer to this question.
In '98-'99, SCSA was the biggest name in wrestling, bar none. Not even the NWO topped his popularity.
Then came 2000 and something happened. When Rock hosted SNL, it became apparent that Rock was going to be the biggest thing the industry had ever seen. His popularity was mind-blowing back then. It wasn't long before he developed an aura which no one--not Hogan, not Austin, not Cena--could ever match.

Austin, but Rock is/was a way better wrestler. I would have to heavily dispute that.Austin was a mchine in the ring.he had very few peers in that respect.Rock was not one of them.

Austin, but Rock is/was a way better wrestler. I disagree completely. I always thought Austin was very underrated in the ring and honestly was a better worker before he became "Stone Cold". Rock was okay. Austin was solid.

The fact that the classic "WHAT" chants are STILL being heard today, many years after they started, would lead me to believe Stone Cold Steve Austin was way more over.

Austin, but Rock is/was a way better wrestler. Woah man, thats just wrong. Austin was a ring general before his neck injury. Honestly, from what I've seen/watched/read/heard whatever, Austin was insanly talented in the ring before he broke his neck. And then even after that he was still better than alot of the others at that time. Rock never really got any real skill technically until like 2001, which was like a year and a half before he would be gone.

Austin hands down.
The Rock, rose to popularity when Austin left during that stint of time. I loved that time period, believe me I did but I think just like every other fan, I was awaiting Austin's return.
I can remember I was so excited at Unforgiven 2000 to see Rock defend his title in the main event, but I think I was 10 times more excited when Austin returned that night. Stunned Shane and you know the whole 9 yards.
So for me, Austin wins.

I guess the other guys would be Savage-Triple H....I mean, since they both apparently banged Stephanie haha!

I'd have to say Austin, but Rock wasn't too far behind. Rock managed to gather alot of momentum while Austin was out with his neck injury
