Anyone can win the Royal Rumble
This was a phrase you heard quite a great deal back in the day and to a lesser extent you still hear it today. I was just curious if you ever believed it and if you did what specific Royal Rumble did you actually think someone who really never had a chance in hell would win.
For me it was Royal Rumble 1991 and the guy I thought would win was Kerry Von Erich, He was one of my boyhood heroes and without a doubt in my mind he was winning the Royal Rumble. Before the show I was really excited as I was convinced that the Ultimate Warrior would beat Sgt Slaughter and Kerry Von Erich would win the Royal Rumble.
My reasoning was that if he won the Royal Rumble he would have to get another match against Mr Perfect to get his Intercontinental belt back after getting cheated out if it. My Royal Rumble predictions didn't exactly go to plan did they lol.
So how about you guys was there any strange wrestlers that you actually thought would win the Royal Rumble?

For a split second last year, Santino looked like he was gonna win and some of my friends were texting me saying "HOLY CRAP!!" and then he lost lmao

I thought Goldberg was gonna win it in 2004.that Rumble had several guys that could have won it in theory.I also thought Morrison was going to do it last year......especially after THAT spot.the story told itself......but ah well.

2004 was a year I just didn't know who was gunna win. Benoit was my favourite wrestler but I couldn't see him winning it and when he got put #1 I thought it would be a storyline thing whre Heyman or someone else screws him out of the match. What a match that was! 2002 was a year where I just loved the Rumble and for some reason didn't clock on to HHH winning it before hand so that one too. Last year had a few possible winnders and I didn't expect Del Rio or Santino Other than that every year has always had a predictable outcome really.

I thought 2002 was very predictable with HHH coming back from a 9 month injury...the focus was basically on him. Same deal with Austin in 2001. 2000 hardly had any star power besides the Rock and Big Show and everyone knew Rock would win it.

Some RECENT Royal Rumbles have been awfully predictable. I hate it when they're predictable. Usually there's always 3 or 4 guys they will push as possible winners and you just choose from that group.
Ehh...I can't think off the top of my head of any Rumbles that seemed to not have a clear winner until the end. 2001 maybe. I really thought Kane was going to pull it off. Plus Rock, Austin, Undertaker, etc. were all in that one too. Pretty unpredictable I suppose.

the two years dreamer was in the rr i begged for him to win, knowing fully well there was a zero % of a possibility for that.

Once the "title match at Wrestlemania" stipulation was put into place many years ago, the Rumble became very predictable. A guy like Big John Studd would have never won had that stipulation been there from the start. The match can still be entertaining, but the outcome is usually a tad underwhelming.

They always said it. You always believed it.

Honestly....not really. The Royal Rumble has been very predictable for many years. There are years here and there that pop up and surprise you....Like Cena winning or Duggan winning the first one but most of the times Ive been spot on with predictions. Im actually at a loss this year because nobody is really getting the "royal rumble push" as I like to call it. Makes me excited

HBK in 2010 when he was desperate for the Undertaker/HBK II. I thought he was a lock for it

Last year and even more so, this year.
WWE have done a fantastic job making this year's match as unpredictable as possible. It's only the over-analysing, over-thinking, fans on the internet who have narrowed it down to 4 possible candidates this year anyway.
p.s. 2006, and 2008, weren't predictable. Hence all the smartasses claimed Orton would win in 06 and Triple H would win in 08, and they were wrongwrongwrong.

Whenever Rey Mysterio's first Rumble was. I came out of it saying, well he did really good for his first Rumble. Sorry for nitpicking, but he was also in the 2003 and 2005 Royal Rumble matches. I'd definitely say that your theory is all about star power and a superstar's credibility going into it. You mentioned 1992 as being a match where almost anybody could win, and I agree. If the company still promoted stars like they were the Texas Tornado, or even Roddy Piper or someone like that, then we'd have major believers thinking that Ezekiel Jackson, or even a guy like Jack Swagger or Cody Rhodes would win it. With all that said, the most unpredictable Royal Rumble in my eyes was definitely either 1992 or 2004. So many superstars had their own little storyline agendas to get the big WrestleMania match.

I also remember thinking Diesel would win 96 and thought for a split second last year that santino would win lol
Also i remember thinkin Diesel would be number 30 in 2002 only to be dissapointed at Booker T

Back in 1999 I thought Austin was going to win the Rumble for the third year without a doubt...
Also, I'm at a lost this year. I can think of Jericho, Rhodes, Barrett, Sheamus, Orton, Miz, possibly Kane, possibly Bryan, and possibly Ziggler have a shot at winning it.

It was very predictable looking back at it but I was young back then, didn't know of the IWC and just loved watching wrestling. I wanted RVD to win it, so dissapointed when he was eliminated.
