It is pretty sad that from Wrestlemania V when Savage lost the belt to Hogan until he interfered in the Title Match at the 91 Royal Rumble, Macho Man was just wasted.
Okay, they did the fall out of the WM V match with the Zeus angle/ tag match at SummerSlam 89. Then shortly after (November?) Savage beat Jim Duggan to become the "King" Then he was wasted away in the Dusty Rhodes/Sapphire angle all year.
I cant remember if he was injured or not but was there really nothing for him to do in 1990?
I guess Savage was a casualty of circumstances since there really wasn't many faces for him to feud with. Looking at the roster Dusty Rhodes probably was the biggest name available.
Am I overlooking anyone? Thoughts?

I actually question now if Savage was injured in late 1990. He didn't wrestle in the Survivor Series that year, and at the Rumble all he did was do that run in angle with Warrior. I don't remember him appearing on any SNME shows during that time either in a wrestling capacity. So I always figured he was slightly injured during that time period.

yeah,i can't remember any actual matches he was in from SummerSlam 1990 ( against Rhodes,in a lackluster affair that didn't last long as they had Dibiase come out at the start and show he had bought Sapphire, which resulted in Rhodes being distracted) until WM VII....
and i agree,it kinda sucked....he lost the feud with Hogan, lost the 2 high-profile tag matches with Zeus vs Hogan and Beefcake, lost another match to Hogan for the belt on The Main Event in Feb. 1990 ( with Buster Douglas as the ref) , and lost the mixed tag match at WM VI ...then he beat Rhodes at SS, issued the challenge to Warrior at Survior Series, interferred at the Rumble, then onto WM....
if i remember correctly, Macho was "scheduled" to be in the Rumble match, but no showed, and Piper and Monsoon storylined it by saying he fled the building after the Warrior came after him...

Had a broken thumb or wrist and needed surgery to repair it. Still wearing a cast at WM7 if you go back and check.
Savage claims he would have got the belt back if he weren't injured, instead put it on Sarge.

Hogan and Savage were tight then.....and Hogan vs Savage is still Hogans best feud-in ring and at the box office.maybe Hogan wanted more of that gravy.

The no show by Macho at Rumble 91 was a new idea but it was played out a few times more (for Bret in 94 and Austin in 98 and maybe more) and by those other times it was just silly.

Because Savage was injured, Hogan lobbied for Sarge to get it off Warrior, so he could get it back at WM7 witht he Irap/USA feud. Hogan was desperate to get the belt off Hellwig, this coupled with Vince's being disapointed by Warrior's run, Hogan got his way. Perhaps if they gave Warrior the 1990 summerslam Eathquake feud, followed by perhaps a Dibiase winter feud his reign would have been more memorable.

well, the initial plan was to have Warrior vs Savage at WM VII be for the World Belt, with Hogan vs Slaughter being an undercard/ "fighting for the USA" type of thing..... so,i could definitely, conceivably, see Hogan still win the match with Slaughter, Savage beat Warrior....build to Summerslam 91, WWF World Champion "Macho King" Randy Savage vs Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Championship?

Semi- off topic but.. It's unfair for people to claim Warrior had a weak title reign since Hogan kinda sabotage Warriors title reign.
Hogan destroyed all credible heels prior to WM 6 and fresh faces like Earthquake Hogan feuded with due to his ego. Earthquake should of fought for the title being a big intimidating new beast but Hogan wanted to get all the 'OMGs' by body slamming him. Dibiase or maybe Perfect should of gotten a bigger main event push. But there legitimacy was probably as much as Rude had. So perhaps an irrelevant alternative

Warrior would have gone over Savage at WM7 title or not. No heels ever left Mania at that time with the title. Always the fairytale ending

At the time, I don't think Vince would have ever dared have a heel go over at WM in the main event. It wasn't until the attitude era that we saw that happen. The Savage/Warrior thing was during a time when the faces almost always went over the heels in the main events.

true-even Yoko beating Bret was just so Hogan could go over

the question then becomes, if Savage was telling the truth, WHEN does he get the belt? they started the buildup to Warrior-Savage at Survivor Series,to have it run to WM.....so, Savage maybe beats Warrior for the title at the Rumble instead of Slaughter? they have a rematch at WM VII,not only for the title but career vs career, and Warrior regains the belt?

Vince had also planned for a Warrior vs Hogan rematch(in which Hogan would go over)so that factors in too.
you would presume that was gonna be a title match too.I think the arrival of Flair and Sid in summer 91 changed Vinces view of the future somewhat.

I had always heard the orignal idea for WM7 was Hogan/Warrior II, with Hogan getting the win and the title. However, Hogan didnt want to work with Warrior again and handpicked Slaughter as his opponent. BUT, he did still want the belt. He then convinced Vince to have Warror drop the title and make Mania's main event himself and Slaughter in "USA vs Iraq."
If Vince had gone through with Hogan/Warrior at Mania, where do you think that would have left Macho? Do you think he may have been left off the card, considering his lack of appearences leading up to the event? Who could he have had a match with?

Triple Threat: Hogan vs Savage vs Warrior would have been epic, never hear that as a dream match do we? Thats the Golden Era's equivilent of HHH/Austin/Rock right there.

Maybe Savage was supposed to take the belt off Warrior at the Royal Rumble to set up for Savage vs. Hogan at Mania. I remember leading up to all that, Savage said he wanted to be Champion again in an interview at Survivor Series 1990 and then interfered in the Warrior/DiBiase match a few days later on The Main Event. But maybe cause of his injury they had to change things.
