What was that all about?
Were they a cult? A terrorist organization? What where they supposed to be?
It doesn't seem that the WWF didn't let that unfold to a proper extent or maybe I just don't remember and they sucked so much that it would have been awful for them to even continue.

they sucked, they dropped the ball with Kurrgen, he could of been the unstoppable monster of the company but Kane come in at the same time which killed Kurrgen off & left to go into the oddites IMO

Yeh I didn't really know what they were about either. None of them really did anything in the WWE before or after this. I suppose Golga(John Tenta) was the only one who did well from the oddities

I think they were South African "soldiers" or mercenaries. I heard the original idea was for them to be brought in (with a few others) and feud with The Nation of Domination. It had something to do with that whole minority racism thing going on in south Africa...Not sure of the details that went on over there

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did they not have a manager at first? Was it The Jackyl?

Man, the WWF's roster really had a revolving door, either to the costume dept. or the unemployment line, during the Attitude Era/Monday Night Wars. I sometimes think back to guys like Doug Furnas & Philip LaFon and wonder...how did guys like that get runs??

They obviously didn't want to spend any of their stars time in ECW, so they threw out two nobodies.

Actually their first manager was The Commandant, who I don't think has ever been notably identified as being anywhere else in wrestling. They started off in the USWA (at the time a sort of development system for the WWF where the Nation of Domination first got their start) and were promoted to the main roster. And yeah, they had absolutely no heat and had a terrible elimination match (that I love) against the Disciples of Apocolypse at Survivor Series 1997. G2 is right, the original idea was that they were a militant group from South Africa but after the Commadant was dropped they became the Jackyl's own personal army. They broke up at around January/February 98 when Jackyl would berate Recon and Sniper for losing and have Kurrgan beat them up, until they couldn't take it anymore. At that point Kurrgan and Jackyl both were taken off TV and Recon and Sniper continued to team up as 'Armageddon'. I know there's one of the few matches they had on Shotgun on youtube but I can't find it right now.
Group roll call:
Kurrgan = Kurrgan Recon = Bull Buchanan Sniper = Luc Porier, most notable for wrestling in other countries as 'Rambo'. Tank = Mike Hallick aka the man formerly known as Mantaur. He only lasted a few apperances. Also he was apparently also Goldust's bodyguard that Warrior beat up in 96. I guess they had his number on speed dial for whenever they needed a big, useless body.
I have now just written more about the Truth Commission then anybody else in the history of the internet.

I forgot all about The Commandant. Every time I see the Truth Commission I think of Lethal Weapon II and Krugerrands

They were really dull. The gang scene in the WWF at that time was terrible. I guess it was their attempt at nWo type groups, but it sucked hard. The NOD was awesome of course, but Los Bariquas and the DOA were awful (spin-offs from the original NOD) and the Truth Commission was weak as well. (And that NWA invasion with Jim Cornette was even worse.)
Remember the Jackyl putting jewels on people's heads like Bret Hart giving away his sunglasses? That was kinda interesting.
