This is one thing I hate when it comes to wrestling. If they're good in the ring who cares is they're promos suck? If they're matches entertain who cares if they can't "talk them into the building". Imagine if we did that with all sports ( yes I still refer to wrestling as a sport)"Peyton Manning is a great Qb but his post game interviews bore me, he really needs to work on that." Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? I think Billy Gunn was a great wrestler that got stuffed into a few bad singles gimmicks. However Mr Ass was over and would of been a great main eventer especially during the time when Austin was out for the year. Hell he was better in the ring then Rikishi and Rikishi got a spot in the first elimination chamber. I believe in 1999 after he won KOTR they botched his push. Do you mean the 6 man HIAC? Rikishi wasn't in the 1st Elimination Chamber. it was HHH, HBK, RVD, Kane, Booker and Y2J.

All I remember about that was the hilarious promo the rock cut before it.

First and foremost, someone needs to be able to entertain in the ring. Billy had MORE than adequate mic skills (certainly better than 90% of today's "talent"). He was unfortunate enough to be paired with probably the greatest mic worker of all time during his first major singles angle.

Mr. Ass was his most successful gimmick and also his biggest downfall.
It was a fun gimmick for a DX member or tag team anti-authority comedy character but as a main event player he was viewed as being out of his league and a joke.
Hence the famous "kiss my ass" match with The Rock which ended Billy's push so suddenly. They were't going to have their main star being someone named Mr. Ass especially when top talents such as Rock and Austin were still around. Billy Gunn had no chance of reaching main event status for a long period of time wihile being utterly destroyed on the mic by Rock every week and having such a hokey gimmick.
Hell, even his entrance music was made to create laughter and not to be taken seriously as someone who was going to be a main event player.

You were never going to have WORLD CHAMPION, MR. ASS!!!!! His gimmick made him popular but also did put a ceiling on how high he could go. They tried later with "The One" Billy Gunn, but that was too late.

I always liked Billy Gunn. He's entertaining in the ring and we don't really get that from much of the roster. I wouldn't mind if him and Dogg were given an angle into WM. Especially with this being WMXXX, there should be a few nostalgia matches thrown in if the wrestlers can still work well.

The New Age Outlaws sold more merch during the most successful period in wrestling history than The Rock, Triple H, Foley and anyone else who wasn't named Stone Cold.

Got any proof to back up that claim? Google "new age outlaws merchandise sales", it comes up with tons of sources all saying the same thing. I was wrong though, they were third (behind only The Rock and Stone Cold). Still, my initial point stands. They outsold Undertaker, Kane, Foley, Triple H, even DX. Granted the merchandise is sold as a duo, but saying Billy never put buts in seats is among the stupidest things ever said on this forum.

Anyway, those aren't sources. That's just several sites using the same C+P "they had the 3rd highest merchandise sales" line. That's like me saying "John Cena is an alien from the planet dnjgnjgn 7" and citing sources as people just copying and pasting what I said. It's besides the point anyway. I don't doubt that the NAO were a draw. I don't doubt D-X were draws. The One, Mr. Ass, Rockabilly etc. were never drawing gimmicks. This isn't a thread about the New Age Outlaws, it's about Billy Gunn. And that's why he was never a success as a singles wrestler. He just wasn't a draw. Never was, never will be.

Just because you like them doesn't mean they're perfect.

You guys are arguing about two different things which is why both of you are confused with each other.
Anvil Fan is saying Billy Gunn (AS A MEMBER OF THE OUTLAWS) drew well, was popular and had huge merchandise sales. All of which is true and agreed by Camalfitano.
Camalfitano is saying Billy Gunn was a flop (AS A SINGLES WRESTLER) and failed to really draw or be nearly as popular as he once was as a member of the Outlaws. All of which is also true.
Billy Gunn: Outlaws/DX member - Draw, popular, over, successful. Singles wrestler - Meh.
