Did he ever take Singing lessons? In Unplugged his voice cracks a lot so I was wondering.

With all due respect to Cobain, if he did get lessons I'm sure his teacher was highly incompetent.

Cobain had terrible vocal range.... he was singing songs that were way out of his range, notably Lake of Fire and Plateau(Which aren't even his own songs), and was struggling to sing them. I think some of the appeal of him to most fans was the unclean voice in which he sung with.
He probably had no lessons... if you sing out of your range and chain smoke, your voice is going to sound like shit.

That is the honesty of Cobain's style. It's like Bob Dylan. His words are the most effective coming from his rough voice. I was watching a show on VH1 Classic where they noted he picked the Meat Puppets' songs because they were way out the range he could sing. Nirvana was about being gritty and emotional, which is what Cobain was.
