Favorite Hard Song: Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Favorite Softer Song: either 1979 or Disarm.
Their best cd is Siamese Dream.
This is the order Id pick cds up
Siamese Dream Gish Zeigtiest Adore Mellon Collie Machina
Mellon Collie really was overrated. Besides the singles, there were very few good songs on that album.

My favorite Smashing Pumpkins song has always been Hello Kitty Kat. But some others that haven't been named (and probably won't be named) that I've always really enjoyed, in addition to some that CMD named...
Frail and Bedazzled Honeyspider Stars Fall In Pissant ...Said Sadly Thru the Eyes of Ruby Drown Infinate Sadness Dreaming Lily (My One and Only) Pug Age Of Innocense
I've always felt that Pug and Age of Innocense are the two best tracks off of Adore and Machina (respectively)... and in Machina and Age of Innocense's case, one of the only good tracks. I think Siamese Dream is their best work, with Mellon Collie close behind... no suprises there. Then I'd work with Adore and Gish and some b-sides and other stuff before going onto Machina and Zeitgest (which I don't really like at all).
Hope this post helps. Enjoy the music, they've been one of my favorite bands since I was really young.

SOMA!
"Zero" and "Tonight,Tonight" are my other favorites. The strings in Tonight are amazing.

Though the production annoys the piss out of me - with the volume turned up at a resonable level, it's very buzzy sounding.

Though the production annoys the piss out of me - with the volume turned up at a resonable level, it's very buzzy sounding. I've been pretty fond of that version of the song for awhile. It's like a guitar version. I think that video was from when Jimmy rejoined the band and replaced that bald studio drummer who filled in for them for awhile. The guy who wore headphones and shit. Although I've never had a problem with the album version, I do know what you mean. Songs like Pug, Eye, Ava Adore, etc... production can either make or break them for people. I never had a problem with it, but I can see where someone could. But check that video out. It's different from the album version. Now an album that production COMPLETELY ruined... look no further than Machina. That album was so overproduced you'd think it was made by robots. Adore was really good though. I still listen to it a lot, and it's something different than their other stuff. But Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, followed by a lot of their b-sides and crapfrom those eras will always be my favorite work they've ever put out and always will be.

And to the person who said just get the greatest hits CD -- that will work for about a month. The Smashing Pumpkins are a good singles band, don't get me wrong. A ton of their singles are some of my favorites. But if you don't want to wear them out, or if you don't want to hear stuff you've heard for the past 10 years on the radio already, just buy the albums (or do what you need to do) and listen to the tracks that haven't been overplayed to death already.
Because while they're still good songs, I'm sure you've heard Zero, 1979 and Tonight, Tonight hundreds of times already.
