How long do you think it will take for Blu Ray & HD to take over DVD's? I mean to the point where the majority of new releases are only for Blu Ray & HD, and not for DVD.

I'd give it about a year to two years? That's how long it took for DVD's to take over I beleive.

I don't think they'll take over until HDTVs get into more homes, not to mention until one of the two formats backs down. No one wants to buy the format that won't last and unless they buy a dual-format player, they have to make a choice.

I've got a Full HD TV, and have the Xbox HD-DVD Drive, as well has a Blu-Ray player.
I have to say, the Blu-Ray looked way better than the HD-DVD did.
To answer the question, i'd say a few years, until one format "wins" the war, and becomes more main-stream with players, media, etc.
I don't think anyone wants to jump when some players are $200-$400.

A LOT less than half. However, I think that both formats are going to be around for a long time. I could see both formats sticking around for this entire generation of DVDs, until the Japanese prefect (what they're currently calling) Super High Definition and another movie format is invented. |

It's a lot different from VHS to DVD. High-def also means getting a HDTV to get the whole experience. With DVD you didn't have to change how you view TV. There's a lot of cost involved that your average consumer just doesn't see the need to pay for. Seeing that the movies cost an average of $30 each is also a big turn off. That, plus from working at a movie store I can tell you that the whole thing confuses many people. I'd give it a few years.

Yeah, it may look nicer than traditional DVD's but DVD's have just recently caught on. People are finally seeing, if they haven't already, that "Hey, I need to upgrade to DVD." People don't want to reinvest in another format and I don't blame them, it's stupid.

I think they'll both fail. People are so use to DVD's and with upscaling TV players, who needs blu-ray and HD-DVD?

Having to pay thirty  ing dollars to watch a single movie. It's not America, it's people in general that don't want to pay those ridiculous prices. It's in' stupid. |

Seems like it will take at least another 10 years or so. Every year we get more and more hd channels, but you don't see them cancelling any of the regular channels. Until they officially use the HD signal and prices come down even more on hd tv's it will be a while.

I think it will take a While, DVD's caught on because the Players could run on Standard TV's and still give out a great Picture, with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players you really do need a HD Setup to see what it can do, Because it just looks the same on a Standard TV compared to a DVD Player.
And theres no way the General public is going HD anytime soon, It would cost people a bucket load of Money just to have a Setup, unless HDTV's start getting Cheaper than it looks like most people will stick to DVD.

Another thing to keep in mind is that VHS quality is pretty mediocre when you compare it to DVD. However, when HD-DVD/Blu-Ray is juxtaposed with DVD, DVD quality is still good. That's the reason (aside from obvious increase in cost) people aren't catching on with this as much, I think. Most people are satisfied with good quality over outstanding quality. It's just not really a priority since what they have already invested in will suffice.

Neither one of us has any interest in Blu-ray or HD-DVD until the other one tanks. |
