It depends on what you mean. If you mean biggest wrestling news story TO FANS, I would go with WCW bought by WWF. If you mean to the whole world, it would be the Benoit events.

Im gonna go with the buying of WCW. Of course if your looking media wise then yes Benoit is a bigger story. Lets be honest though. The effects of Benoit will be felt for MAYBE 2 years. Even after that its not like they are gonna shut the doors on wwe, the wrestlers will just be smaller in muscle mass.
HOWEVER, the buying of WCW changed the entire wrestling world. Not only for the last 6 years put probably for close to 10 more years if not more. Two multi million dollar companies and then BOOM one is gone. Its like its not a big deal if Coke stops making Sprite but it would be HUGE of Coke bought out Pepsi!!

The creation of TNA and ROH, was never that big of news because no thought they would actually become as big as they have.
I think WWF/WWE buying WCW was the biggest. The Benoit thing isn't something I would class as a wrestling story.

Benoit's death, no question. Nothing was more shocking, and nothing will get as much news coverage.
I would give second place tie to Vince buying out WCW and Eddie's death.
