Eh, I think violent games could have a negative influence on people just like violence in music and movies could. Aggression can be attributed to a mixture of mental health and violent media. It's a subjective case. People who aren't as easy to manipulate aren't going to be affected by it. I'm one of those people myself. I played GTA, Silent Hill, MGS, and Resident Evil 2 as a young teen. Those games are all pretty violent for their time. I've never been in a fight or hurt anyone, though. I'm totally against real world violence even.
It's the mental health of the person in question. NO VIDEO GAME will "cause" you to kill someone or do some other violent act. It's your development, your upbringing, etc. etc. that will result in potential damage. Older folks who look at games as "murder simulators" need to come with terms with that. You're going to get your deranged nutjob who plays a game and gets some crazy ideas...don't let those rare sensationalized cases distort the truth. Millions of people play violent games - how many of them go out and commit acts of violence? I'm going to say not many. Since it's apparently the majority of us who are mature enough to handle these games, why penalized us for the kids who shouldn't be playing them in the first place?
Why don't we just outright ban anything psychologically troubled people can get influenced from while we're at it? Who needs freedom of thought or creativity? Let's all live in happy go lucky fantasy land where nothing bad happens and we all play happy grab ass with each other in a garden.
Violent movies exist, violent literary works exist, violent theater exists, violent music exists...each and every one of those things could influence people in a bad way. Anything could, really. Bad relationships could cause pent up angst and result in temporary insanity with some people. My point is it is pointless to try to link together violent media with real life violence when it's all rooted in other problems in life.

Well i dont really see it to have such an influence that does lead to voilence. In fact, games can lead to a building in skills and strategies. They can actuall be very stimulating and have positive effects. However, there is a minority who do not know where to draw the line between what is right and wrong such as games like World of Warcraft which is somewhat notorious for being bad. To be honest, i see TV programs being a larger influence on children acting violent elsewhere.

If the kids cannot separate video games from reality, they are ed up. It's not the video games fault. It's the parents fault for not teaching them that. 100% True Me and my friends love violent games but we aint going round murdering people because we know its jsut a damn game so... If someone gets affected so much by videogames there just not right

People want to blame violence on something so they go after tv, video games. It really comes down to morals and sanity. If you don't have these you may have a tendency to exhibit violent behavior. It's impossible to ever know what really influences the human brain. Meanwhile there's this giant war in Iraq that is both bloody and violent being talked about and shown on the news. And those same idiots blame video games instead of their own news program.

I play violent video games all day everyday and I treat everyone like they are my brother or sister. It is not the games it is the person. They have something broken in their brain.

I think everyone in this thread is right on about violence being a more inherent trait.
News organizations and parents' groups love to jump to causation. This music caused this action, etc. But, the more practical thing to realize is that if someone is inherently violent, they will likely be attracted to violent video games, television programming, movies, and even music. So there may be a correlation between the two because of this, but certainly not a causation. And it is unlikely that an already violently dispositioned person will play a game and have that be the trigger that causes them to go over the top.
A hell of a lot more people turn out to be violent because they see it at home with their own parents' actions than because of anything they watch on any screen.

Usually, the person playing the video game has to be at least a little noticeably deranged to obsess, and kill. I have a friend who is quite obsessed with his XBOX 360 and violent games, but he doesn't seem like a murderer. Though he did wield a large stick earlier.

I hate it when things are said that video games caused it, it is not true. The people who kill, have a head problem that does not let them know if its part of the game or life. I believe that one hundred percent, after they banned Manhunt from the uk, guess what it was only one dumb ass kid who made that. The kid was probably ed in the head before, and had anger problems and snapped.

i dont think video games screw kids up its something else, i mean i play horror and murder games all the time, but i dont want to kill people. If the kid is so screwed up as to take the game into reallity then its not the games fault.
