violent video games

hey. i already posted this in the gaming board but more people seem to visit this one so i might get more of a response.

in one of my media exams for collage i am doin about violence in video games and if they cause violence in children. so i figured this would be the best way to get peoples opinions over a wide area. i would really appreceate the help. so i would like to here your views and experiences on the subject. do you think violent video games cause children to act violently elsewere? or is it down to something else.

If the kids cannot separate video games from reality, they are ed up. It's not the video games fault. It's the parents fault for not teaching them that.

Video Games have no affect what so ever. If a person is stupid or ed up enough to kill, they are gonna do it with or without playing any games. People just need something to blame it all on, and Video Games usually get the blame. I play games for hours every day, I haven't killed anyone, nor do I have any intention to.

Personally i see it as violent games can disturb children and send them crazy but the thing is age certificates are there for a reason, if your letting a 7-8 year old play on an 18+ game then what do you expect. A lot of kids at that age don't know how bad the world is and that you can't go around copying everything you see. It's not until your 10 or so that you are exposed to how bad the world really is, children don't understand the bad.

Heh, i'm doing the same course. I think it depends on the person, the majority of people will not be influenced, but some a tiny amount of others may be more suseptable

There is no connection between violent video games and people who act violently in real life. There are people who play violent video games all day and they are the nicest people you could ever meet, then there are people who never played a video game in their life and they can kill without remorse.

There is an x-factor in certain people and either you have it or you don't. Some people just have it in them to kill and others don't. It's all DNA and what goes on in the brain. Just like watching gay porn or being around gay people can't make you gay just like if you are gay you can't become straight if people try to "fix you" because they are ignorant enough to have a problem with it...you are either born with it or you aren't.

I've enjoyed violent video games all my life, gory movies as well......i've never been in a fight in my life and i don't even like killing bugs. So the theory that violent video games causes people to be violent in real life has serious flaws.

I'm sure there are some young children who don't know the difference and just like people try and emulate their favorite movie and tv characters somebody saw something on a game and tried to do it in real life and somebody was hurt or maybe even God forbid died from it.....like when kids backyard wrestle and something goes wrong.

But I think the parents groups take it too far in believing that violent video games is going to turn kids into mass serial murderers who go out and commit massacre's.

Every once in a while some kid is going to copy something and somebody will get hurt, but thats the same for TV and cinema as well, and you can't eliminate all forms of visual entertainment out of fear that every once in a blue moon some kid with other problems not related to the video game/movie/tv show isn't going to be able to tell the difference between reality and entertainment.

If your screwed up enough to kill, you will. Video Games have nothing to do with it. If you go out and kill someone because you saw it on a Video Game, your already messed up to begin with.

Violent video games don't cause children to be violent. I've been playing violent video games ever since I was a kid and I've never been violent towards anyone.

Age ratings only exist based on the actions of a minority, which is probably autistic and/or insane anyway. The fact is, GTA is a great game for relieving stress, and if you've been bullied it is a fantastic way to enact your revenge on people. Vaguely violent videogames such as Tony Hawk's games carry 16+ Ratings over here just because of a tiny bit of blood when the player falls off the skateboard.

When I was younger i wouldn't try to reenact what i saw in videogames, partially because most of them are unrealistic anyway. The few that do belong in asylums. Besides, a parent buying a game for a little kid is gonna know if the game is going to have an effect on them. Of course these days it's just the parents spoiling their children who don't even understand what the game is based on but scream that they really want it, and they get bought it.

So in conclusion people are idiots, and so are the age ratings people.

i play grand theft auto i play def jam vendetta and a bunch of other fighting shooting games but i dont go to my school shoot people steal cars and stuff i think if a kid cant seperate the two they shouldnt play video games but luckily just about every kid can

I blame parents for everything. They rent those games for their kids they're aren't meant for. I played the violent games at an age I shouldn't have. But when you grow up watching wrestling, I think you learn to differentiate between fantasy and real life. Parents make too big of a deal of games. Their are guidelines and ratings for a reason, you should know your kid well enough to know if they're suitable for your kid. My mom probably rented those games because she knew neither my brothers or I will go beat a hooker, try to shoot dinosaurs with arrows, jump down pipe drains, or attempt to raise a fire underneath someone.

That and she wanted us to shut up and not bother her for a few days.

But still. Bad parents complain about violence, they don't try to teach to differentiate for their kids. Instead they act like dicks, their kids do drugs and drink, and both lives are wasted.

I don't think video games or music, movies, or whatever have anything to do with all the violence in todays society. They're just used for an easy excuse whenever a kid shoots up a school or punches someone in the face. What about all the adults that are crazy these days? Can video games be blamed for a 45 year old man taking cops on a high speed chase, bank robberies, morons shooting up bars, mothers drowning their kids, etc? I don't think so.

That's partially true. The only part I disagree with is the parenting part. I mean, I agree that it is the parents responsibility, but some people just turn out crazy. That's not necessarily the parents fault.

The argument I have always given is, if someone is ed up enough to go out and kill someone then they're going to. Murder is not a new concept that was introduced by video games, it's been around as long as humans have. Why aren't violent TV shows, movies and/or comic books being called into question? Why is it only music and video games? It makes no sense. Primetime TV has some of the most violent **** around and that's ok, but the second we want to steal some cars and shoot cops in GTA there's a congressional hearing. What the is that?

It's all about the parents in this country not wanting to do their jobs, which is to get off their asses and raise their kids. I'm sure you all have noticed that they don't bitch about violent TV shows and movies (like I mentioned earlier), why do you think that is? It's because they like violent television and they like violent movies. The average parent probably isn't into violent games (or games in general) and they don't listen to "problematic" music. These self-righteous a$$holes will do everything in their power to fight for the rights of children everywhere, just so long as it doesn't effect anything they like.

the kids should have a more dominant influence than video games in their lives to guide their morals. i could see how exposure at a very young age may induce psychological thoughts but young kids shouldn't be around m rated games anyways.

No they have no effect at all. Its the parents responsibility to monitor what their kids play, watch, or do. That's why they put the ratings on the games so parents know what their kids should be playing and what they shouldn't.
