It's been a slow day at work and I have too much free time on my hands, so I decided to take a deeper look at just how many new legends/flashbacks we're seeing, and how it compares to the history of the line. Like I said...slow day.
For the purposes of this thread (and my sanity), I made some cutoff decisions. It gets murky as you get to more recent years. This list only considers Elites and UEs - there are some people who appear first in basic form (ie Ted DiBiase). I only looked at the first appearance of a wrestler, not multiple characters from the same person. Any attire from 2008 and before is considered a flashback, since the line launched with 2009/10 looks.
The first number is the number of true FTIL legends. The second number in parentheses includes the first appearance of a legend who previously appeared in the line (ie the first flashback for HBK). The list probably has a mistake or two, but the numbers give a little context to the "we're not getting any more FTIL legends" conversation.
2010: 25 2011: 17 (20) 2012: 10 (11) 2013: 8 (10) 2014: 9 (10) 2015: 10 2016: 15 (16) 2017: 14 (15) 2018: 6 (10) 2019: 7 2020: 10 (15) 2021: 3 (4 if you include Strongbow) 2022: 3 (5) 2023: 7 (10) 2024: 7 (8)
To me, the most interesting thing is that the number is a lot more consistent than I expected. Aside from a couple of outliers, we're between 7-10 most years. The big difference is that names earlier in the line were stars or midcarders with long careers. Now we're getting a lot more wrestlers who had short runs in the lower/mid card or stars outside of wrestling like Mr T and Ali.

I think the real issue is collector fatigue....
Mattel's had this line for what, 14 years? They've covered a LOT of ground.... as each year goes by, and they make more new figures - there are then LESS "new names" to choose from...
I know MY collection has ballooned and is way larger than it should be - and I've had to get pickier due to space, and I certainly don't have room for re-releases (even though I don't condemn Mattel for doing them). I just don't need to be buying duplicates of the same figures! So those are mostly passes for me.
In addition - WWE/Mattel has lost a bunch of my "go-to guys" like Ric Flair, Sting, and Macho Man, Those were ALL "instant-buys" for me and they are gone. So I get crankier (as a collector) when we don't get any new stuff for these guys.
I guess what I'm saying is - - - I've had to become very "picky" as a collector and I just won't settle for yet another Undertaker & Shawn Michaels re-release. It needs to be something "NEW" for me to buy it - that's not Mattel's fault - I just have a LOT of stuff!
Ultimate Steiners are PERFECT..... just what my collection needs.
But do I have room in my bloated collection for Golga and "Make A Difference" Fatu? It's just me - - - but those I feel like I can pass on. I feel like I need to save those spaces for characters that were more important to me.
It's like a big "action figure bubble" and it's kinda full..... and that's because Mattel has done such a great job over the last 14 years! I've bought SOOO much. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way.

I am surprised by these -- especially by how bad 2021 and 2022 were --I felt like there were more those years.
I think people would be a lot happier if these stayed in the 10-12 range, but understand the circumstances...

Those stats are interesting and tell you we have gotten fewer FTITL names over the last 4 years. A lot of this has to do with AEW being around and a lot of smaller toy markers getting the rights, perhaps. It doesn't help that Mattel can't just sign whoever they want since WWE doesn't allow them to.

Seeing guys I want to add to my collection signed by smaller companies is always disappointing. ..
Bad news brown Haku Power and Glory Slick Jack Tunney One Man gang Dino bravo Macho man Ric flair Brooklyn Brawler Legion of doom Demolition Godwinns Etc
I really had a lot of hope with this sdcc with Vince gone and maybe some room for additions without big contracts for macho and flair etc. I am really disappointed.

Serious question: Why not get those smaller brand versions? Hastel has the Godwinns coming and they'll just slot right in with Mattels on my shelf

I had a bad experience with dynamite kid. The company went under and then had to be bought and salvaged and took forever to get after I already paid for it. And the quality is not the same as mattel. Just that bad experience and I don't trust them.

Powertown said their figures fit right in and yet they're giants compared to Mattel. The only brand Ive seen actually fit were the Chella figures (Dynamite) but I dont even know if they're a brand any more or who they've been rebranded as.
