when you break down what was going on in WWF between RR in January & WM in March? Good grief it was one hell of a busy time for Vince, JR, Prichard and the crew....
1)Prepping HBK for the main spot.
2)Warrior is returning & trying to get that deal done.
3)Razor & Diesel are out of there
4)Hall fails drugs test WM card reshuffled & one of the main bouts changed.
5)Piper coming back
6)Bret is outta there after WM
7)Yokos increasing health issues force another change to the card
8) Mero, Foley & Pillman all coming in with varying degrees of expectation
9) Ego interfering with layout of Iron Man match
10) Vader & Austin still being figured out by Vince.
Ill tell ya lads......that is a LOT.

It was a busy time. I think the only one worse was WrestleMania 19. If you were like one of the mid card guys at that time, I would have just quit haha. The HISTORY of top guys with the exception of a few, were in the company at the same time.

Wrestlemania XII to this day seems like it was put together the day before. I just feel that it could have been a way better card. Especially when you look at the Royal Rumble and see everyone in the company at the time, and then either guys leave, get fired, or get injured, and things totally change in two months.
I still say one of the worst 3 team combinations ever was Yokozuna, Ahmed Johnson and Jake Roberts. Nothing says a "new generation" like having Jake the Snake in your fed too in 1996.
But guys like Sid, Tatanka, Mabel, Hakushi, 123 Kid, Razor Ramon, Kama Mustafa, Isaac Yankem, Fatu, Marty Jannetty, all missed the biggest show of the year for various and obvious reasons.
Too bad guys like Marc Mero, Mankind, and Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw just missed the time frame to be a part of Wrestlemania XII.

Kind of crazy to think about it like that! Must have been a nightmare to try and plan stuff for, especially given that Shawn Michaels did not exactly go over super well as champion.

2020 definitely wasn't a cakewalk logistics wise. Even then you had several substitutes, including your BIGGEST star backing out of your expected main event.

Great point....that was definately a tough one. I should have said up to that point maybe? My suggestion is deserving of an asterisk, mitigating circumstances. Just going by the book, they would have juggled a lot in 96. |

I can only imagine how much of a pain in the ass laying this match out was Depends on whos telling the tale but peripheral folks all seem to agree on the falls being a sticking point. that why it ended up being one...in sudden death. |

I can only imagine how much of a pain in the ass laying this match out was IIRC Bret did more of the planning. Believe Shawn mapped out like 20/25 mins and Bret covered the rest |

I still hate the Iron Man match to this day. It comes off incredibly boring on so many levels. And I am such a huge fan of those two men.
A great match between HBK and Bret was Survivor Series 92. It went around close to 30 minutes too I believe, and it was just fun and exciting to watch. Maybe because at the time, Bret knew he was the main man and HBK just won the IC Title so he was content with finally being able to shine with that title, so no egos were involved.
I also feel Bret didn't like being a place holder for HBK to take the title. If you look back at Survivor Series 95 - WM 12, Bret had some great matches but they always got overlooked by other story lines between the wrestlers. Rumble vs. Taker and Diesel gets involved for that story line. Feb. In Your House vs. Diesel and Taker gets involved to continue that story line. All the while Vince is hyping up HBK with the Rumble in and the big match with Owen at the Feb. IYH show.
Bret didn't like (and this is just my guess) that his time was up in a sense. But not sure what Bret expected, we all saw it coming in 1995 when HBK returned as a baby face. The fan response he was getting in 1995 June - Dec. was insane! Bret didn't, but perhaps it was because Bret was in feuds with Lawler, Yankem and Lafaitte.
To be fair, we can't overlook the chaos going into Wrestlemania 13 too! If Bret vs. HBK was really gonna go down that night for the WWF Title, makes you wonder what Steve Austin would have been doing that night??

HBK should have taken the first fall and then play catch up the rest of the match, hit the superkick out of nowhere and tie it up and then get the win with some kind of creative finish, beating Bret with a pure wrestling move would have been a fun twist |
