It is June so the perfect month to talk about King of the Ring! I recently watched Roddy Piper vs Jerry Lawler from the 1994 King of the Ring and my god is this match just horrible. I remember it not being that great, but it was so much worse than I remembered it being. These two guys had absolutely zero chemistry in the ring together. At the time, I liked the back and forth they had leading up to it, even if that super skinny "youngster" that was involved was weird as hell. However, the match has to be one of the worst main events of all time! Off the top of my head I am having a hard time thinking of a worse main event than this. These are two guys that I like, especially Roddy Piper so I wonder why it never clicked. Also, I forgot how great of a shape Piper was in! He looked fantastic here in 1994. What are you guys thoughts on this match and is there a main event you think is worse than this one, if there is let me know so that I can avoid watching it  |

My favorite part this was suppose to be the NEW GENERATION ERA and we have a main event of Piper vs Lawler

I remember the match not being good but only seen it once.
Cena vs. Laurinaitis was a joke of a main event.
Diesel vs Mabel was trash.
DX vs Taker/Kane 2018 was horrible.
A few matches I have a hard time believing it was as bad as though.

wasnt a great match by any means. but for me, im a bit different. i dont need 5 star matches for them to be great for me at timers, just the match up itself and seeing wreslers i like goin at it makes a good match for me. which is why i LOVE wm9 and most dont!
with that said, piper is in my top 5 favs and i still loved this more then many main events, like the bret vs shawn hour long ambien match. id watch piper/lawler 10 times before id watch that crap show match again. tmnt brought up another abomination in deisel vs mabel!

I guess the thinking at the time was we needed a baby face to end the night as the winner after the DQ finish for Diesel/Bret and the Owen Hart KOTR win.
Piper was the only baby face option left.... oh wait, there's that Lex Luger guy that wasn't even on the damn PPV in a match! A run in to help the Headshrinkers beat Crush and Yokozuna was all that was needed for Luger that year apparently.
Honestly, looking back at KOTR 94 I would have rather seen Lex vs. Yoko as the main event with Lex getting a clean pin on Yoko to kind of get him steamrolling again into title contention.
Piper vs. Lawler was a dud of a match though. And that weird skinny guy who sounded like Piper being there too was just a weird distraction.

The first time I watched it live on PPV it was scrambled, so I had picture but no sound. Then I remember renting it years later with friends and was so excited for commentary for the event and then I heard Art talk and I was like, "I am going back to the silence PPV version I have." Ha ha ha

I wish we would have gotten the Piper/Lawler feud that was supposed to happen in 1983, before Roddy went to New York, back then I know they would have had an all out war. Roddy is my all time favorite and this match definitely was not good. lol. Roddy was ripped and it kinda looked really weird lol. With their two egos I'm sure nobody wanted to give an inch or let the other guy get one really over on the other. That's why we got a crapty roll up finish. It was what it was, brought Roddy back and helped a children's hospital. Thankfully they didn't keep it going. But, I'll still watch it from time to time to see the train wreck that it is!

This match must have been so bad that I've actually erased it from my memory. I bought the home video for this event, which would have guaranteed that I must have watched the show back umpteen times, yet I cannot remember a single thing about this match.
And the next PPV they headlined with Undertaker vs.... uh, Undertaker....

Iāve never seen the semi finals, final or main event from KotR ā94, halfway through the show, I was cheeky to my parents and got sent to my room!!!
Piper and Lawler seemed like perfect foils for each other. I would have expected Piper to treat Lawler as if he was Flair in ā91 by going after him chops, chokeholds, eye pokes and barricade face smashes and for Lawler to treat Piper like he was Bret AND Helen Hart with the age jokes as well as taunting him over his heritage and downplaying or ridiculing his career and then bumping like crazy for him and acting like his typical comedy heel self, all cowardly, yet sneaking behind the refs back with low-blows, feet on the ropes and foreign objects - all the fun heel tropes. Canāt wait now!
Have I just overhyped myself for this match!?

The decision to effectively put Savage out to pasture at the end of 1992 was probably the biggest own goal the company managed during that time, swiftly compounded by manoeuvring itself into a dead-end by giving Hogan the belt back.
It could have completely changed 1993 and 1994 for the better had they kept Savage active and around the main event and upper midcards at the PPVs. So many wasted potential matches, while plodding along with Yokozuna or the match in this thread as headline attractions. Savage vs Bret, Michaels, Razor, Narcissist could all have been really great stuff to bolster a flagging company.

Yep, though I will say in Vince's defence that Hogan and Piper pretty much left of their own accord, chasing the dream of being full-time actors, rather than being actively moved to the sidelines. Savage, by contrast, was still fully committed to being part of the WWF, even moving up to Connecticut around this time I believe. |

My favorite part this was suppose to be the NEW GENERATION ERA and we have a main event of Piper vs Lawler Thatās what got me too, like they had this focus on young guys but prior to this, I canāt think of any instance where they brought out a star from the past to main event. And the guys they would bring back were older than the guys they would make fun of for being old. Like, Out with the Hogansā¦.heres Bob Backlund whoās even older. The real joke was the guy they picked to lead the youth movement was Bret Hartā¦who was pretty old himself at that time. Itās crazy to think that when Warrior returned at WrestleMania 12, he was younger than Bret Hart and around the same age as all the āyoung talentā. |
