He would make so much more money being on a merch deal with wwe, I know tony will do whatever to keep him on a mech deal tho i mean what would AEW even do with him once he retires? Just sell t-shirts?? There isn't any surfer sting action figures they make. theres no surfer sting in there videogame. They just dont have much in the form of legends stuff on offer. They have Owen Hart in there videogame. And they are making some ROH attires for current stars. They dont use Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko, Jake the snake etc TK might just keep him on as an agent or whatever Mark Henry and Big Show are. Dude has countless folks on the payroll just collecting checks.

I really hope he signs some sort of merch/figure deal with WWE... we need Sting Ultimate Editions!
An Elite 3-pack/boxset (like the Hogan and Foley ones) would be great too.

Yeah, I don't think Tony will let him go - he'll probably pay more than WWE's Legend deal to keep him as a agent, producer, coach, manager, ambassador, etc. Sort of like how Vince resigned Taker to a contract (his contract had expired and Taker was going to start doing conventions/I think Vince was worried about AEW). They can keep on selling Sting merch - if they can't release figures of attire that Sting wore in WCW (do we even know that this is the case?), maybe they can just release made up color combos of surfer Sting. In addition, they can release new Sting shirts and figures of current Sting wearing those shirts. They're action figures - they don't have to be 100% accurate. And Sting doesn't have to be an active wrestler to release merchandise for him.

Based on what I have heard - AEW should be able to do Legend-Blond-Surfer Sting type merch if they chose to.

I would go with one of his blonde haired surfer Sting looks from the early 90s (with the WCW Replacement Championship Belt), a brown-haired surfer Sting (probably from the last time he appeared this way on Nitro after Fall Brawl 96), and then Crow Sting from Starrcade 1997 (with WCW Big Gold Belt). Basically, this:

I think most of us will be forgiving if it’s something they have to take creative liberties with in order to produce it versus something they have complete rights to make with reference photos and footage with no obstacles preventing them to make accurate. Like no one is complaining about Capt Lou’s shirt cuz we know they didn’t have the rights to the original image. Or Gargano’s Wolverine top.

But I was also trying to get three different looks from his three different eras; blonde surfer Sting, brown-haired surfer Sting, and Crow Sting. But, the real question is, what would be your Macho Man set???

Start loading up on Surfer Stings in Elites and UE only. And give the Nitro Stage another chance with the Crow debut figure as part of it.

Because I have the pale purple trunks (DM WrestleMania III figure), and the actual WrestleMania III pink trunks from the Legends set. And the RSC Macho King figure. So those are my “top 3” Macho Man looks. And as far as Neon Cowboy hats with long tights go I would hope they do your favorite. That would be good enough for me as I know you would nail selecting the best ones.

1. L7 figure 2. Blade Runners with Rock (these could be basics) 3. Earliest Crow that was in the surfer style paint (also fine with this being a basic) 4. Capital Combat with shark cage 5. Wolfpac with goatee Blade runners would be awesome! Since wwe shop had the diamond studd, terra rizing, mean mark T-shirts I’ve said doing a ‘before they were famous’ style line would be awesome! Doing dingo warrior shows they’re not totally against it

Practically, I think the first figure they would get out of him would be the Legends early crow Sting figure they had planned. After that, I would prefer an elite or UE of surfer Sting with neon pink pants and the long coat.

It is my understanding - from someone who has a merchandise production deal with AEW - that Sting retains all the rights to his prior facepaint/attires. Based on what I have heard - AEW should be able to do Legend-Blond-Surfer Sting type merch if they chose to. I compare it to Goldeneye for the N64. Microsoft owns the rights to the game but they can’t re-release it without Nintendo’s permission because they published it and it only appeared on their console and Nintendo can’t re-release it without Microsoft because they don’t own it. Same with specific looks of characters. Sting may own the name & likeness of the character but since specific looks only appeared in WWE owned programming AEW cannot make them without WWE’s consent. That is why they’ve only done flashbacks of non-WWE looks with Owen, Sting, and Jericho. AEW released one of those little micro figures or whatever they are called of Sting in his surfer look, and TNA did the same when he was with them, so I think his ownership of those looks will permit it.

I get what you are saying but it doesn't really make sense; Sting owns the rights to these looks; They didn't automatically become property of WWE just because WWE owns the video footage that they are shown in. WWE has the right to air those shows at their leisure..... and Sting has the right to reprise those looks at his leisure. WWE didn't create these looks, Sting did.... the gray area may come in where - who DID design Sting's tights? A private seamstress? Would she own the IP on these tights/jackets? The Owen Hart situation is a little different - I think WWE has costume designers, and his "King of Harts" attires may very well have been created by WWE and no, AEW can't touch that. His name, his face, and any attires that weren't created by WWE (proven by the fact that he wore them before WWE) are what AEW is able to use. My buddy doesn't run a toy shop, but he does run a different kind of company and they are currently developing some merch utilizing Sting's original facepaint designs.... he has met with Sting and Sting indicated that he owns all of these likenesses. At least, the facepaint.... Also, when Sting was with TNA - JAKKS/TNA did release Surfer Sting action figures.

Jakks did his TNA and NJPW looks. And I think there’s a loophole with those micro brawlers. Like the production run is small enough for them to get away with it or they alter it enough where it’s not infringing on their IP.

Everything that appears on WWE TV is their intellectual property. Jazwares can’t make a figure of a character that appeared on a TV show they don’t have the rights to. And Jakks made figures of Surfer Sting outside of WCW. The USA Sting is from NJPW.
