I will not use self checkout for basically the same reasons. I work a lot of hours. My free time is very valuable to me and there is no way I am going to spend any free time doing more work and for no pay. What is next? Maybe I should unload the trucks for them? How about I go and stock the shelves too? By using self checkout we are saving the stores millions, probably billions combined, we are putting people out of work. And where does that money go? No back into our pockets. It goes in the pockets of owners, CEOs, Executives and investors. It started as a convenience to quickly get customers checked out. And big-wigs saw that we would just keep doing it the more they put those self checkout registers in their stores. The light-bulb lit over their heads and they knew they could dupe so many people into working for them for free. Now many only have self checkout and nothing else or maybe 1 or 2 regular checkout lanes. I mean can you imagine someone that works a register all day and then goes to a store and has to work someone else's self checkout register to make their purchase? Maybe when we want a bite to eat we should go to a restaurant, pay them and cook our own food? Seriously people need to refuse self checkout until they offer some kind of compensation for it. Why are we giving them our money and then doing their work?

One thing annoys me about Wal Mart is the door monitors need to see your receipt. I'm literally walking out with the bags in the cart. I never stop for them. If there's a line I just walk in front and out the door I go. I didn't steal anything and I already waited in a line to checkout. I'm not doing it again. Besides when someone actually does steal something they just let them go without saying a word. How backwards is that?

Whatever will be faster for me to leave is what I use. 95% of the time that means self checkout. I don’t usually get a lot of things at once, so the inhumane task of scanning like 5 items isn’t really “work.” If it’s grocery shopping and a cart full of items, yeah most likely going to go to a cashier.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard “unexpected item in bagging area”

Stay in line for 5-10+ minutes < do the bare minimum of swiping a couple items. Yeah,I'm not quite that lazy yet.

My only issue is when they have 10+ self checkouts and only 4 are turned on. If you're going to make me use them, have more available so I'm not waiting forever.
I do use scan & go with my phone if a store has that option.

If I have only a couple of items, I'm not gonna stand in queue at the 2-3 registers actually manned (and usually have a longer checkout time anyway) on "principle". A full cartload, I need a cashier. Time and opportunity to fully unload your cart, no pressure in loading your bags. And being honest, I tend to already get profiled as a prospective shoplifter as is. No need to give someone the chance to go full vigilante, not where I live.

The thing with technology is that it can always malfunction. Self checkout especially. In my experience though, I've had more encounters with malfunctioning human cashiers than self checkouts. There have been times where I've took my items & left due to self checkout machines screwing up & staff are either being busy or not available to help. On one occassion I put the correct amount of money in the machine for my things, took my items & exited. The other time I put the money on the side & left.

Oh definitely need a cashier if I got a whole cart, unless I have someone with me that can open the bags quick(yes,I'm that guy that can't get the bags open lol). My nerves are way to bad thinking people are watching me or I'm taking forever to do it. Not great with fruits/veggies too lol.

I vastly prefer self-checkout, and have started to avoid shops where they don't have that as an option.
Maybe I'm just lucky in that I haven't had a technical hitch in years, and never get asked to show my receipt. It just seems like a faster, more efficient way of doing things.

I will use them if I only have a couple items and there’s a line at the registers with cashiers. I’m not a big fan of them. I’ve heard that some places ask for a tip for using the self-checkout, I feel that’s going overboard.

Not that I believe your story, because obviously, but let’s say I did. It’s much more likely the employee saw you waiting in a line and let you know a self checkout was available if you didn’t want to wait. You know, doing their job and trying to help. And you just stared at them not saying anything because being rude to retail workers (and based on other threads of yours, generally everyone around you) is part of your whole gimmick. I don’t agree with the reasoning of not using self checkouts because it’s “not your job” but that’s fine. If you didn’t want to use it you could have simply replied “no thank you” or “I’m good.” I guess that’s too respectful though.
I personally use the hell out of self checkouts. Because I don’t want to be in a store any longer than I have to be. Used one today. Took literally less than two minutes. Meanwhile had I waited in one of the two lines they had open due to under staffing, I’d be there an extra 20 minutes.
It’s your choice and I won’t argue that. But maybe learn how to treat other people. That is if this isn’t all just another post to get reactions. Idk.

Love using self checkout. Get to see my self on the video screen and see how good I look, and it's easier to steal using self checkout.

I'm also convinced people who dislike self checkout are either old and out of touch and dislike them because they saw a Facebook post that said "I'm not doing your work for you"
Or people so technically ungifted they couldn't figure out how to use an electric tooth brush.
Or both.

JC Motors told me that you're banned from atleast 15 Walmarts on the East Coast for stealing deli meat. a) I don't eat meat b) I learned my lesson a long time ago as a kid when things were much different than today. I had a messed up family, not going to get into that. But one of the things they did is shop lift like crazy, mostly my father. And I was indirectly taught to do it. So I did until I was caught one day in a store called Jefferson Ward. When I got caught the store "detective" grabbed me, took me into an office and handcuffed me to a chair and said he would call the cops. My parents were still in there shoplifting themselves so they were paged and came up to get me. After that day I never stole a thing in my life. Now a days these kids and adults are allowed to do it. No consequences and nothing to fear. No lesson learned except for the opposite lesson that I learned. Oh and yes I was banned from all Jefferson Ward stores, lol.

I normally only shop on my hour lunch break from work, so I like things to be as quick and efficient as possible. I use the self check out line. I work in retail and at our store find self check out is NOT harming anyone's jobs. I feel like it adds more cashiers to the mix because customers don't know exactly how to use self check out. But for me, I like it because I want fewer bags to carry and I want everything specifically in certain bags (dry foods in one bag, freezer in one, fridge items in one). Again, I need to use my time on break efficiently. If self check is not efficient, I won't use that location much if at all. I like the selection of food better at Giant than Walmart but the flaws of their system are so bad at our store, I've stopped going.
Also, cashiers generally like to use a lot of bags because they don't like stuffing too much in at once. Sometimes, they will put fridge food with frozen (which isn't bad but not helpful to me) and in the past with the Walmart revolving bag thing, I've forgotten items and never seen them again.
