Had quite the experience at Wal Mart today. I was standing in line to be checked out by a cashier when another employee walked up to me and said "Sir, could you please go to the self check out line?" I just stood there and looked at him. After he not only asked me a second AND third time I looked him in the eye and said " I would be happy to check myself out if you will give me the proper paperwork so I can use my time working here as a tax write off". He was stunned I stood up to him so I waited in line and paid for my items at a normal cash register as it should be. I refuse to use any kind of self check outs or do any type of work myself in big box stores. That's what their employees are for. I would rather stand in line for an hour than use a self check out.

I'm the opposite. I try to only use self checkout if at all possible. I'd rather GTFO of the store and get on with my life.

I use them if the other lines are full. It's not a big deal.

Sometimes I get intimidated if I have a bunch of fresh produce that I can't scan and have to look up the number code for but then I successfully do it and it proves to me there's nothing to be afraid of and I can accomplish anything if I set my mind to it.
Also there's usually an employee I can just ask for help.

First time I saw one was 8-10 years ago at a McDonalds. I walked in and stood in line. An employee/a teenager came over and asked me if I wanted her to show me how to use their new self ordering system. I looked at it, looked at her, and said, "if people start using machines people won't have jobs." She came back with, "I won't have a job if people don't want me to teach them how to use the machines." I pointed at the cashier (a 50 ish year old woman) and said, "I'm more worried about her than you. Sorry."
I don't like them. I've gotten halfway through and something goes wrong and then I have to stand there and wait for help. I've gotten all the way through and then there's something wrong with the keypad when I'm trying to pay. I don't work for the store. Why am I doing this? Among other things they were supposed to reduce salaries which would lower costs, and that sure as crap hasn't happened.
There was a hilarious story in Ottawa a few weeks back. A Walmart there is scrapping the self check out ideology because there has been a 30% increase in theft. They are staffing the self checkout stations with employees to do the scanning now. What makes this story absolutely fugging hilarious is the sign telling customers about the changes,
"Test?" IT WAS ALWAYS LIKE THAT. Someone scanning your groceries is now considered a, "full-serve experience?" That's right. Bring the kids on down and woo them as the cashier uses a magic gun to read little black lines on a box. Enjoy the concert like rush you'll get from watching the previously mentioned cashier place your items into a bag. There will be music and dancing and balloons for the kids.

I prefer self checkouts because actual lines with cashiers are usually longer. The thing is, this is where we're heading and there's nothing you can do about it. At some point we'll have have mostly stores without any employees just like Amazon Go stores where you could just walk in and walk out without having to use your credit card. There's also tech where you could just scan the palm of your hands to identify payment. I think this brings up a sh*tload of problems. I think the weirdest thing for me was adjusting to Mcdonald's (even though I don't eat there anymore). I remember it being a colorful place where you could eat, have fun and play at the playpen. Now, it just looks like a giant metal tinbox from the Jetsons. I sound a bit old, but things are changing very quickly. I think I read by 2030, most cars will have to be electric. Just a lot of things going on.

One thing annoys me about Wal Mart is the door monitors need to see your receipt.
I'm literally walking out with the bags in the cart.

No way! Once I enter the store and get everything I wanted/ need I want to be out of there as fast as I can. Majority of my stores have lines for the cashier and I am not waiting 20 minutes to be attended to when I can be out of there in 2 minutes when using self check out.

The thing with technology is that it can always malfunction. Self checkout especially.

The only thing keeping me going to stores like that is self checkout. People who work in those positions are only getting equal parts lazier and stupider.

Yeah but there aren't any good looking self checkout machines............ Unless someone is into that kind of thing.
