Hopefully a simple question.
Where were 1990 Applause toys sold?
They had Hulk, Jake, Macho, Beefcake, Warrior, Andre and Bossman-about 3 inches tall like LJN rubber. I am really just looking to remember the name of the store they were sold in. At the local strip center where these were sold 30+ years ago is now a UPS store (very quick service). At the big mall outside of town they sold them as well back then. The store also sold a bit bigger size, similar rubber toys of Gilligan and IIRC Skipper but I can't recall owning that toy. I did have Gilligan.

I had a few and bought them from a local greeting card and gift shop called Lance’s.
I wish I could go back to that place; when they shut down in the ‘90s, they still had monster toys from the ‘60s in stock.

We had them at our small town Fair Store where I went to school. It was like a catch all drug store, or almost a very mini Walmart in a way for those who didn't grow up with them. They definitely had greeting cards to keep that theme going. I had another store almost identical to it but closer to my house. I don't remember them having the Applause stuff, not to say they didn't, but I do remember them having Hasbros. That store was specifically my spot for Kenner Star Wars figures. It seemed like they had endless amounts for $.99-1.99 when I was a kid. I used to go there with loose change and buy Star Wars toys.
Man that hurts to think about now because the place just closed one day and was gone without any pomp and circumstance, and it wasn't unique in that regard, sadly. The Fair Store stuck around much longer but morphed out of what it used to be anyway by the late 90s. I remember trying to get Ken Griffey Jr UD rookie cards there just buying packs. Same sentiment, though. If I had a Time Machine to my childhood, those places would be on my list of things to see. Small town shops like that were time capsules and it's really unfortunate we don't still have eclectic family owned stores in that mold anymore.

Several have mentioned greting card stores and I will continue that trend, but I understood that they appeared at Hallmark stores.

I remember finding all of mine at hallmark stores or something like it. I would have been around 9/10yrs old at the time

In Australia they were at Timezone. This was an amusement/arcade place. You could trade game tickets for them.
They came in standard, standard with a base (sometimes called cake-toppers), keyrings and pencil toppers.

Hallmark does seem like it's ringing a bell but wow where they different looking than the one down the street (about to close after multiple decades). The one near me has a darker, older feel to it and has kind of a chocolate smell. Even in the 80s the place was outdated. Where I got the Applause, the lighting was much brighter and place was newer looking. The two stores looked like party city meets Disney store. I also don't remember them selling chocolates while most local strip center Hallmarks did.

Wow, I didn't remember how many of these I had as a kid until seeing them all laid out like that. I winder if I still have a few floating around in boxes.

I never knew they came in a bagged set! I only ever saw them for sale in little plastic tubs on a countertop.

The stampers were excellent, they were basically soft plastic figures, almost like these Applause figures but with a stamper on the bottom base. I had Warrior and Macho Man, Macho looked particularly great in the attire he had. I think there was Warrior, Bossman, Savage and Hogan. I'm not really sure what company put them out. ETA So it seems like these were available via KFC in the states, with somebody in the comments section saying that they were given away in kids meals at Burger King, though I bought mine in a sort of supermarket/card shop type place that I forget the name of... |

Those stampers were awesome, I had them all as a kid. I am sure I have told this story before, but I had the Macho Man one on my desk under this spotlight lamp.... a early 90s spotlight lamp, one that you could move around as it had a bendable neck. Anyway, this thing was hotter than the surface of the sun and actually melted my Macho Man stamper!

I remember those lamps 😄 I used the Warrior and Macho stampers, minus the stamper bit which I pulled off, with my Jakks mini figures in the late 90s. We really should've had that Macho as a Hasbro. I always wondered if Warrior and Hogan's arms were supposed to move, as they were glued on separately, but we're oddly stuck in place. |
