There was a time when WCW's Cruserweight division was full of colourful luchadores but under Bischoff's booking each lost their masks one by one.
First, Juventud Guerrera, then Rey Mysterio and lastly Psychosis. I also heard that he tried many times to unmask La Parka but came to no avail.
I don't get why Bischoff thought this would be a good idea. He basically stripped away those guys identities and for what purpose?
Looking at WWE at the time you had Kane & Mankind who were over huge so I don't understand why Bischoff didn't want masked wrestlers in WCW.

Basically IIRC, Bischoff thought masks prevent relatability and connection with the audience, and in order to become marketable stars and convey emotion to get the fans behind them, they needed to be wrestling without masks.
Then when it is pointed out that WWE marketed Rey's masks and made bank off of them, he just says hindsight is 20:20. Basically ironically confirming the notion that is abundantly obvious - that Bischoff is/was incredibly short-sighted.

Masked wrestlers have always been marketable and kids love them. What I also love too is the mystery behind the mask, it adds a lot to their characters. Looking at Rey during the RA era he was basically The Guy of Smackdown and it was mainly down to the mask. Go to a Smackdown show then and you would've seen nearly every kid wearing Rey merch. |
