I was watching some stuff on the Youtube Red show Good Game. And they had a gag where they wanted the show to take place in a world where the movie Elysium was Star Wars level big. So everyone would quote it, have toys of it, posters, it was a cultural moment.
So I am curious, what are some real things like that for you? Like what movies came out where you thought "This could be huge!" This could be the next Star Wars" type thing?

Wouldn't say its a Star Wars level movie but I'd go with Bolt. Its my favourite Disney and favourite animated movie but for whatever reason, its just forgotten about.

"The Batman"... I thought it was a good film. I thought it would surpass the Nolan films due to how hyped it was and def go over the Affleck fanboys.

John Carter. Movie built in a sequel setup and should have been a big franchise. Should have had figures, merchandise, McDonalds crossover, all of it. Has to be one of the biggest marketing failures in Disney's history but the film itself is some of the best sci-fi adventure the last last 20 years has to offer imo.
Honorable mention would be Dracula Untold. Really fun origin story to that universe and had some great action and performances. I was hyped for the end of the film for what would come next. I don't think it had the mass appeal built in the way John Carter did, but it's still a good film that should have easily launched a huge modern Monsters franchise. I was pretty shocked at how little people were captivated by it outside of genre fans checking it out. It was really digestible for people who needed a gateway into "horror" because it was far more action/fantasy with an extremely iconic character.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. There should have been sequels, and spin-offs, and its own section in Disney +, between Marvel and Star Wars.

Atlantis The Lost Empire. Great animated Disney movie that features Guns, smoking and a princess that knees people in the crotch. What more do you want? It had a direct to video sequel that was basically three episodes thrown together from an unproduced TV Series based on Atlantis The Lost Empire. The movie does have an incredible cult fanbase, Disney doesn't Count Princess Kida as an official Disney Princess because the movie wasn't a success at the box office.

From what I've read John Carter was proposed years before it was made but was thought to be too expensive to make. Now to add to the list.... I'd say Vampire's Assistant Cirque Du Freak. I loved that film. The movie is based off a series of books so we know the story goes deep. The movie was made with a sequel in mind. But instead we just got the 1 movie.

Cabin in the Woods
I thought the whole play on "horror" movies being created by humans for the entertainment for a God, was unique and different. It could also be used to make a prequel on the first experiment or how they were able to capture all those different monsters.

Thought for sure the latest Power Rangers movie would result in a new franchise. Fun movie, great cast, and even a build to a sequel. Sadly the goofy ass “you’re ruining my childhood!” crowd weighed it down and people refused to give it a chance.
