2:30 PM “Hey, it’s Doug,” says a man among a camera crew. They are all gathered inside the Roscoe Street Motel, preparing for another day of work. The light technicians adjust the height of the portable lightbox to get just the right angle for the profile shot. The blinds on the door leading out to the back balcony of room #1408 are opened, letting in more light into the obscured room. “Yeah, we’re just finishing setting up for the 3 o’clock interview.” An intern makes her way behind the man on the telephone to adjust the two chairs that were placed next to each other and moves one directly in front of the other. A slight nudge to the left and it’s at the perfect angle. “The interview with the masked wrestler that never talks.” There’s some tension in the air, although none of the crew will acknowledge it. “Well, let's hope so. The agent wasn't the most helpful person.” The camera techs run a test to ensure the device ready for showtime. “I’ll keep you posted.” Doug hangs up the phone before turning around to face his crew. “Are we ready? It’s almost time.” The crew all acknowledge their boss with a thumbs up. The boss man stands there with his hands at his waist. The door behind him suddenly opens. “Where we at?” walks in Katy Bailey, the primetime news interviewer for 6ABC News in an orange suit. Her hair and makeup already done prior to her arrival, always the consummate professional. “We’re pretty much ready to go. We’re just waiting on the guest of honor.” Katy walks over to a small table in the middle of the room that is littered with papers. “What do we know about them?” she asks. Doug lets out an audible sigh. “Not much. Their agent wasn’t very helpful.” She skims through the paper to learn as much as possible about the interviewee but there’s not much. The paper states the who and the what but that’s it. The agent’s name is Anson and they are a part of the Signature Talent Agency along with the agency’s connect information. “Well, let’s do the best we can. It’s not the first time we’ve had little to nothing to work with.” This is why Katy Bailey is the best reporter in the state. Hand her lemons and she will make the best lemonade.
The sport of pro wrestling is larger than life. The arenas. The matches. The competitors. The goal of every competitor is to become the heavyweight champion of the world and one of the ways those competitors can earn that shot is by competing in the world-famous Rumble, which was brought back by Abadi Global Enterprises CEO and new WFWF owner, Bobby Abadi. 30 wrestlers will enter but only one will win.
Tonight, on 6ABC Action News our very own Katy Bailey sits down with one of those competitors on the eve of the WFWF’s big event, Scars and Stripes, which will be held inside the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Sunday, September 11th at 5:00 PM EST. Find out tonight on 6ABC Action News!
5:45 PM
Katy sits on the chair with her legs crossed, her hands resting on her knee staring at the empty chair in front of her. “Where are they? They were supposed to be here two hours ago!” The boss man in the leather jacket asks himself as he paces back-and-forth. The interviewer doesn’t say anything as she is just as lost as everyone else. “Have we tried calling the agent?” asks Katy. Doug nods, “No answer. Told you that they weren’t very helpful.” Bailey sits up from the chair and walks towards the window, overlooking the busy streets of The City of Brotherly Love. "Do you think they'll show?" asks the reporter. Doug is visibly upset. “Let's hope so. Let's give them until six,” Doug says as he places his hands onto the scattered papers on the table and bows his head down, “Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.” The sounds of the streets are the dramatic background noise. The city is beaming with life. The last remnants of rush hour remain on the busy streets as the sunlight begins to dim. The once illuminated room is now muted. Doug lifts his head up to see the rest of the crew hang around the hotel room browsing on their phones to pass the time. A frown appears on his face. “I do apologize guys. I’ll buy everyone lunch tomorrow. I didn’t mean to waste your Saturday.” His crew all look up from their phones and smile back at their boss at the small gesture. A slight buzzing is faintly heard which causes Doug to panic. He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his phone. This catches Katy’s attention as she leaves the balcony and walks back inside the room. “Hello? Yes, this is Doug.” The silence is deafening. The crew remain focused on their boss whose face remains stoic. This conversation is the determining factor whether today will be a hit or a giant miss. Doug locks eyes with Katy and that’s all that needs to be said. His eyes say it all. “They’re cancelling the interview?” The crew all groan, throwing their hands in the air in disbelief. Katy bows her head. “I understand. Next time though, please give us an update sooner rather than later. My crew and I have been here since noon in preparation.” Despite the words that are leaving Doug’s mouth, Katy has worked with him long enough to know when he’s fuming. And right now, he’s fuming. “Do you think we could reschedule the interview for next week?” He looks up at Katy again. “You don’t know?” His tone was apparent there. He mouths, how do you not know? “Well, you have my contact information. Please call me if you hear anything back. Thanks.” He almost hesitates to hang up but when he does, it’s apparent. “They decided to cancel at the last minute so let’s wrap up here and head back to the station.” His crew all sigh before getting up from the couch and they start taking apart the set. Doug walks over to Katy who appears to be more upset than Doug. “Damnit. I was hoping to get the scoop for the station,” she says. “I’ve never seen anyone have literally nothing on them. That’s near impossible in today’s day and age.” Doug just nods his head in agreement. “Why do I get the feeling like this is all a ruse?” he asks. Katy looks at him, her head slightly tilted to the side. “You think so?” Doug nods his head again. “Like you said, there’s nothing on them. How does one person have no digital footprint or anything identifiable in their name? Usually, we’re able to find…something but not here.” Katy’s eyes start to wander as she tries to formulate some sort of plan. “I say we do some digging on this Anson guy. That’s our best starting point,” she says. Doug’s eyes light up. “So far, he’s the only person that has any sort of communication with them. There’s a reason why they are so mysterious and that’s what I want to get to the bottom of.” Doug pounds his fist into the palm of his hand. “I’m on it! You’re goddamn brilliant!”

That font made this really difficult to read. Maybe that's just me?
I liked this, but it felt like the introduction to a larger piece, rather than the complete piece itself.
Dunno what else to say really.

I'm with Drakz here too. A solid introductory piece!
I am curious to see how you navigate through having an RP about a character that never talks and is supposedly so mysterious though because that could hinder your writing. If it becomes too much about Doug or Katy and not enough about XYZ, the focus will be on the wrong characters.
I'm convinced though that based on your sporadic posts here and on the Discord, you have some sort of plan in place for this story.

i can't take xyz seriously because you're using black bolt as your base lol
black bolt is a c-tier character at best. i personally would've used bullseye lol
i do think you keeping xyz a mystery is smart although i am also curious to see the payoff here lol

It was clear from the very first moment you chose to use Comic Sans that this RP meant serious business. What exactly that business is remains to be seen but surely this RP meant it. One can only surmise that the omission of the nature of the seriousness business it clearly meant was an intentional choice, perhaps speaking to a broader absence of meaning in our modern, alienated times. If XYZ is known mostly for his absence of speech, for this RP, he was known mostly for his absence... in general. Like, literally he wasn't in it. And really, aren't we all, at times, not really "in it"? Not really "in" our jobs? Not really "in" our environments? Maybe XYZ doesn't speak to interviewers or even in general... but for this RP, perhaps he spoke to a greater truth... by not speaking to it at all...

I hope the big payoff is that when XYZ finally speaks he sounds like Gilbert Gottfried.

The exposition and dialouge being formatted together does make it a little harder to read. I guess it's because we're taught in school to seperate the new speakers to make sure everyone knows they are the one speaking. I like the premise of it looking like the start of something bigger. I think you've done a good job here of introducing an important person in XYZ's universe, possibly the mouthpiece. If that was the intent, then it got that objective done. That's all you can ask for.
I am interested in seeing what happens next.
