Hey Wfigs, I was wondering if any of you all also have an affinity for small towns, and what you particularly like about living there and, if you have one, raising a family. If you don't live in one, would you if you could?
I live in a small-ish Texas town, that I love dearly. Being off in the country is nice, except many people have moved out here in the past 30 years that we always assumed would be very sparse. I liked going to school in a small town, though cliques always exist at any rate, but there was a greater opportunity to learn in a close environment that fit my learning style well. I always enjoyed knowing so many people in my town, even strangers would wave and say hello. Granted there aren't the big city things to do in town, we made fun with what we had, and we cherish it even to this day. Fun is subjective for us I guess, because out of towners think we are a desolate wasteland. We have pride in our local cuisine, and because our pallets are geared towards it, nothing tastes as good anywhere else....I assume this isn't exclusive to us.
At any rate, I could wax poetic about this stuff for hours, but I hope it is an interesting topic for you all. Big city folks, please tell us what you all think, and let us know what we could add to our little necks of our woods that we are missing out on.
Cheers.

The small towns I lived in sucked. Seems everybody knows your business at some point. Within days people will know your business. The price of homes/rent in small towns are way overpriced. Some towns it’s all single & double wide trailers. Or old, old homes on a foundation. You don’t have all the options of stores or supplies that you want/need.
Perhaps the only good things from towns are being quiet & isolated. (Isolation could be a double edge sword)

Small town > big city any day of the week and twice on Sundays. I grew up in a small town about an hour away from NYC and loved growing up there. It was quite, clean with no real crime you didn’t need to lock your doors. The city is loud and dirty and you better lock your doors.

I lived in a village of 100 people for a year whilst my Dad had a new job and we moved. It wasn't for me. I've lived in the city for 27 of my 28 years on this planet and just couldn't adjust to it. If that's where you've grown up then you'll not know any different, but when you are older it's either somewhere you'll love or somewhere you'll hate. I was the latter unfortunately.

I like to be able to mix it up. I live in a suburban town and it’s great for my kids, but I won’t stick around much after they leave the house because I like where there’s lots to do..especially near water

I don't like the idea of everybody knowing each other.

I guess we would need the definition of "small town".... A lot of people in our town feel we're "small town" but there's 133k of us in the county.

I grew up in a town of about 6,300. When I moved out, I moved a few towns over with a booming metropolis of 9,000. I now live in a house in a town of 182 people.
I like my privacy.

I don't like small towns or big cities. I'm a suburbs guy.i like to be close to everything, but not so close as to be frequently bothered by large crowds and traffic.
Side notes: my dad, and to an extent of my early years me too, grew up in a small kkk town. Only a volunteer fire department and a few small corner stores. My stepmother grew up in a town with only 1 active officer. On his days off, no law enforcement. Crazy to imagine.

I live in Rio Rancho New Mexico it started as small little middle of nowhere turn ; the rumor is New Yorkers came out here bc of witness protection. The original Rio rancho was predominately made up of New Yorkers.
It sits next to the big metro Albuquerque which is is where I was born and breaking bad takes place in. They started to aggressively expand the northwest side in the 00s which is the closest side to RR.
They also built a intel in the 90s in RR. It became small town to small suburb next to Albuquerque by the mid 00s. And it’s been as part of the Abq metro anyways. From when I moved there to now it’s become overgrown suburb and not big enough city.
It basically is Albuquerque junior; and the crimes slowly coming with it.

I like to visit them, my grandpa’s hometown only has 400 people. My town has about 50,000, and is part of a metro statistical area that includes a major city, and that’s kind of how I like it. In a decent-sized city/near a decent-sized city, but able to “get back to nature” and visit my grandpa’s hometown once a year or so.

I grew up in a small town in southwestern Ontario, I actually grew up on a farm outside it
really enjoyed growing up there in some ways, also was boring at times. happy I got out to the city but I wouldn’t mind returning once I’m older. simpler life out there.
