Hello Wfigs. I am wondering if you all think that everyone is creative, in at least some capacity, or are we conflating that term with imaginative? I heard an odd argument the other day that said to be "creative" you actually have to complete something, but that was never the way I understood the term. I always knew there were levels of creativity, but more inventiveness and ingenuity created the gap there.
How do you all feel about that original argument?
Being wrestling fans, I guarantee we have all come up with cool finishers or gear or better entrance music or storylines....something. Are we not creative? Does the term matter at all, or is the feeling of creating, being imaginative, all that matters?
Just an odd thought I figured would make for an interesting convo.
Cheers.

I listened to a Jordan Peterson clip recently where he said true creativity was rare, but I disagree. There is a high level of creativity that's rare, but I think we all have some spark of it.

This is I think very true. With this having been said, anyone who has ever worked in any form of marketing knows there are people across business who think they are creative because they've somehow ended up with a job where 'creative' things are part of their responsibilities and definitely don't get it at all. That's where the original point of this post is true in that the term 'creative' is applied way too freely to everyone and everything these days.

Sure everybody is creative. Only people don’t know how to use their creativity or know how creative they are.
I remember the creative writing classes that I was in & once I knew how to fine tune my writing I got better.

I would say no, most people are not truly creative. I base this on my time as a musician. we all have influences, but by in large I’ve met far far more people who were only capable of essentially replicating their favourite bands than artists who truly bring something original into existence.
I think the reason most people lack raw creativity is that the majority also lacks a filter for seeing true art for what it is. only a few people recognize potential in young musicians and bands, but once the hype and marketing kicks in, the majority will suddenly hop on once it’s been socially verified as a popular thing.

Will def agree coming from a person who is “creative”. Sometimes people just don’t get or understand you until you hit a level where you hit a mainstream audience. Until then, you’re either deemed as weird or niche. I kind of have a love and hate relationship with that sort of thing and I’ve faced my fair share of things. I believe some people just have creative gifts, while others can develop it later on. I think it’s good to think outside the box.

Everyone is creative to some degree.
I would put myself rather low on the scale though.

I think everyone has something, whether they realise it or not. I think there are a lot of us sleeping on talents that could probably make us rich in the right job. I think about this often every now and again. I've always had a big imagination. I loved drawing growing up and was very creative, still do like to occasionally. I was never great at it but I enjoyed it and people always complimented my efforts. I'm quite creative with picture taking/captions on my phone as well and enjoy taking pictures on my phone and smartly worded writing or even philosophical stuff. I have a great memory. I've always been told I pay great attention to detail when writing or telling stories. I have a secondary account on Twitter called OldSchoolRaw that I'd use for posting On This Date stuff so I basically give WWE free publicity there.
I always wonder how I could use all of this stuff when it comes to a job/making money.

I think we are all born creative in a way. When we were all younger we were all very imaginative. Overtime I believe you outgrow some of that imagination and creativity from our youth. When I was young I used to make up all kinds of stories with my Kenner Batman and Jurassic Park figures. I still play with them from time to time. Now as an adult, I really can't think up a good storyline to play with. On the other hand, I own the Lego Architecture Studio, which is all freeplay. It consists of all white and clear bricks. You are basically all on your own when it comes to making up scale buildings. It's fun but at the same time, I can come up with something if I really think hard and work on it. It's all trial and error.

It all depends on what you mean by creative. Some people are great artists, musicians, actors, directors, etc. But maybe some people have creative ways of doing landscaping, working, story telling, cooking, etc.

I would have to say that humans as a whole are born with the spark of creativity. It just comes in different forms for each person. I knew a guy who could look at the most abysmal, college frat house type of kitchen cupboard that no sane chef would bother with and somehow make the most delicious meal from it. His brother was an awesome artist who could take a theme or starting point and run with it until he made something amazing. I had another friend who was a musical genius who was composing fully orchestrated works in 8th grade.
But the thing is, you don't have to be that inherently talented to be creative. Talent is a blessing but you have to put the work in. Unless you are a prodigy you probably aren't born good at something and, even if you are, you still have to cultivate that skill. I wouldn't say I'm particularly talented at all but I've been working on my creative stuffs and it's a great outlet for me now. Meanwhile, my inability to cook a meal is the stuff of legend among my friends. I had another friend who was a master storyteller but for the love of God don't give him math. It's all about finding and knowing your strengths and building from them.
And really, at the end of the day, I don't think it matters if a person is "good enough for mainstream" if for no other reason than have you read some of the stuff that's mainstream these days?! Have you seen some of the "modern art" stuff they put in museums? I don't think it's fair to criticize anyone for not being good enough for mainstream considering a good chunk of the stuff that is out there for public consumption is... not great. But that's the thing. Creativity is subjective! Some people love modern art. Some people love pulp fiction books. Creativity and creative works are not one size fits all and at this point there is dang near an audience for everything, so it isn't fair to say that people aren't good enough because A. Let people enjoy their own works, B. Let people who enjoy other peoples works do so and C. You have to do the thing to get better at it.
I dunno. Just my thing. I've never seen the point of telling people "You aren't good enough at this to share it" because that just leads to people hating themselves and giving up on their passions and dreams.

I think that everyone has some sort of creativity of some kind. Really focusing on the topic of what makes someone "creative" is a great place to start. I think even having knowledgeable ideas and concepts are things that can count as being creative.
I am a Twitch streamer for the past 6 years so I have been having to come up with concepts and ideas that keep my mind going. That flowed into my career in art that I actually make some money off of now so I guess my creativity payed off.
It all starts with a concept and if that concept is unique, I believe that qualifies as being a creative person.

I think it comes easier to some than others but everybody is at the same level playing field to learn how to do things that are considered creative.

I was creative enough to create my own business. Other than that - no. I have couple of very creative people working for me, that's all. With the microsoft teams sms our customer service improves almost every day and I see already increase in the revenue. I guess there are some more important skills than being creative.

No, I don't think most are creative and that's OK. I think of academia especially. The humanities are filled with these really boring neoliberal types whose creativity amounts to "What if 50% of CEOs were girl bosses?" or "What if 12% of cop killing victims were Black?" This isn't meant to be political. I'm more saying that academics especially have no concept of reimagining society, as much as they want the current system to be more equitable, regardless of whether the system independent of that is good or optimal. Opposition will charge them with being Marxists. They're too boring to be that. A lot of them are system tools and are content to be that
I tend to understand society in terms of castes: people who can take orders and execute said orders very well, Scribes who amount to archivists, mystics who can be weirdly insightful about the system or can even prophecize the future, priests who can redirect society to good conscience, artisans, craftsmen, and tradesmen who can do extraordinary feats with their hands and minds, politicians who can calculate both political will and to galvanize the public behind a cause, cynical critics lived loved only by cynics, generals who can inspire those to sacrifice their lives, the merchant innovators, the musicians who can poetically and harmonically speak to the soul, the poets with the most brevity capture a given sentiment, the artists who are conduit between the seer and the Heavens through an image conveying the most deep of emotions, the special needs child whose meek presence bonds the family together, the martyrs who die for the Cause - and then you got the rest who live their lives, content with day to day routine, who might be a 67% of the population.
No one should be expected to be creative. Often it's to ask something of which they're not capable. We all have a special place in society
