Also The Funhouse from Tobe Hooper from 81

John Carpenter's The Thing
Absolutely love that movie. Genuinely jumped out of my seat during my first viewing. No movie has replicated the same feeling of paranoia and distrust I felt like watching that.
The 2013(?) Prequel isn't terrible for the story, it's CGI just sucks really bad. I'd still recommend watching it if you're bored and have time to kill. I honestly enjoyed it

I highly recommend checking out Shudder. It’s an essential streaming service if you’re into horror.
I’d recommend starting off with “In Search of Darkness” 1 & 2. The documentaries are in depth looks at 80’s horror.
To answer your question, I’d go with The Thing, Gremlins, or Pet Semetary.

The Creepshow series is fairly good.

Anything beyond this and you are getting into Street Trash territory which isn't for everyone. And also the Italian horror films which again isn't for everyone.

The Hitcher. Rutger Hauer was so haunting in that movie, what a performance. Salems Lot as well although I think that was '79.
