I rarely watch AEW and almost never watch TNA, but I’m trying to get up to speed for Swann vs Omega. I’m confused by the storyline dynamic between the two companies. Tony Khan buys ads on Impact and is dismissive of their show, so it seems like it’s the bigger promotion flexing on the smaller one. But when Kenny Omega won the AEW belt, he ran away with Don Callis as though he was defecting to Impact. Is Callis the main authority on Impact?

There isnt much. Its just a way to get Kenny Omega and the Goodbrothers to appear on both Dynamite and Impact each week.

That's the backstage reason for why they're doing the story, but there is an actual story too. The whole thing has been about Callis gaining control over Kenny Omega. Khan initially started by flexing on Impact, but as the story has progressed, he's been losing more and more control over Kenny (and now the Bucks) as Callis gets them wrapped further around his thumb. Could even take that story further if they wanted and make it a big arc about Khan wanting to play wrestling booker with Daddy's money and acting like a big shot, to get outdone by the seasoned carny vet Don Callis, losing control over all his top stars. Obviously, the end to that arc results in Kenny/Bucks becoming face again once they lose everything, and Khan "growing up". The end payoff being a true working partnership without the 'paid ads' where he flexes all over them. Khan isn't an on screen character on AEW, so that's a minor part of the story, but it seems to still be there on the impact shows. I'm not saying it's been the best story they've done, it's been very messy at times, but there is an actual story going on.

Don Callis is Impact's co-executive VP. He claims to be an old family friend to Omega, explaining why Kenny is so attached to him. Callis also previously provided commentary for NJPW, which is why Bullet Club is so heavily referenced in the story.
As for Khan's involvement, it seemed like there would be a heavier brand rivalry in the beginning, with Jerry Lynn helping an AEW team earn an Impact title shot near the beginning. But that aspect cooled off when Sammy Guevara's plans fell thru and directions changed.

I just think it is funny that Tony Khan and Tony Schiavone end up on Impact each week advertising what's going to happen on AEW Dynamite. If AEW is apparently better than Impact Wrestling, shouldn't Impact Wrestling be advertising their show on AEW Dynamite??
I think they want Kenny Omega to be this eras Ric Flair and use all these companies as territories. I wouldn't be shocked if after he beats Swann that he doesn't end up in ROH again and going after that title.

So essentially, rather than an AEW vs Impact feud as such, the story is Callis the virus manipulating Omega (and others) for greed/power? I think the thing that was confusing me was I didn’t get why Callis was going against his own promotion in an interpromotional feud, but also was opposed to the other promotion.

It's kind of odd that on Dynamite they haven't once mentioned Kenny having this match with Swann, that I know of. Like, the AEW Title is on the line too lol.

It's kinda funny cuz in like kayfabe land, yeah Impact should be advertising themselves all over AEW with this partnership. But outside of Kayfabe land, any AEW fans that were gonna give impact a shot as a result of this partnership, probably only really needed to hear that Kenny would be on there, so no sense spending a bunch of valuable dynamite time on it. ROH could definitely happen too. I'm sure that was on the radar when Scurll was hired to be the head booker there. Obviously that has changed, but ROH is generally a very crossover friendly promotion as is. At this point all the promotions crossing over to each other is becoming the most confusing Venn diagram ever. Definitely feels like Khan's vision is to have AEW be the center of that diagram.

It's about Callis' "decade's long" plan to turn Kenny into THE god of pro wrestling. It's he and Kenny only. Anyone else is along for the ride. Anyone against them is just foolish. Once Kenny gets the Impact belt he'll have three world titles and Callis will try for another. Not sure that that could be though. NWA? Will Callis show up on Powerrr, lol?

callis and omega are going into business together, it's pretty much that simple. omega is taking the aew title hostage.
as gil said, it's been sloppy at times, but it is a fun twist on the aj styles taking over the world and leaving dixie wondering wtf with her belt real life scenario a few years back
