I was watching this one in the lead up to the rumble this year and it got me thinking to the urban legend that Vince changed the finish the morning of to Yokozuna winning.
Is there any facts to support this as being truth or is it simply a urban legend?

I dont think so. Yokozuna winning simply because nobody could throw him out was the most logical outcome.

With Yoko getting the monster push out the gate, it made sense he was Vince's choice to win.

Having the winner that year face the WWF Champion at Wrestlemania pretty much guaranteed we would see Yokozuna in the title picture. If it had just been a normal Royal Rumble victory like 1988 - 1991 then there could easily be a chance for Savage vs. Hart at Wrestlemania.
The thing with Savage at this time frame was I don't think his mind was fully into competing and putting on a match. He was a perfectionist for his matches and how they went, and putting him in a main event match at Wrestlemania with Bret when his own marriage with Liz was done and going through a divorce wouldn't be a good thing for Savage's head.
Plus also, fans loved Bret so much then. There is a huge chance fans would have turned on Savage and booed him going into that main event at Wrestlemania if it was Bret vs. Savage.

I would have loved to see a heel Savage one more time in the lead up to that potential match. At least heel-ish. Then after Bret wins, Savage passes the Torch with the post match handshake and is still used as the ambassador role for the company and occasional special attraction on the card. |

Yoko's very clear & apparently win/push from the Rumble also throws doubt into Bret's claims that he was suppose to beat like every 80s wrestling legend in like a 3 month span.

They started foreshadowing the Mania main event at the survivor series 92 with the Virgil interview after the match, it was def a clear cut direction.

I think Yoko was the plan for the RR..no doubt. I've often read the rumors etc for RR93 but I don't think there's anything in it.
I also don't think there's anything in Bret vs Hogan for SS93 either... numerous podcasts say that was never in the pipe because Hogan was always 100% done after the Euro tour & dropping to Yoko.
I never really bought Warrior vs Bret @ RR93...just couldn't see it?

It's funny Randy was 41 when Vince wanted him to no longer wqrestler but Bret was 40 in 1997 and still main eventing and Shawn was in his 40s in his second run

It seemed like from that point forward there was no going back. |
