As a Texan, we are about to be blasted with snow and ice until friday. I am scared of the single degree weather and ice on the roads. To all my fellow Texans, please stay safe, and hopefully work can be remote or called off. For those Wfig residents that deal with this stuff all the time, any advice once the roads basically go, especially since we don't drive well in bad weather down here? I covered the taps, stocked up some on food, and got the heater on. I am hoping I am covered. God speed all.

I had to look up the conversions, you Americans and your silly measuring systems that like no one else in the world uses lol. As far as Texas goes I imagine that's relatively unprecedented in terms of temperature. It's all just an adjustment. I'd melt in that Texas heat in the summer, but I was relatively comfy outside yesterday in a t shirt and gloves in -40 taking out garbage etc. (Turns out that's the same number in celsius and silly old Fahrenheit). You'll get used to it, but yeah it's gonna feel really cold compared to what your accustomed to. Won't kill ya though. Just cover up your hands and ears.
Drive slower and give lots of stopping time and distance between cars. Slow braking. Sheer ice is ice and some traffic accidents in winter are completely unavoidable. You'll all be on summer tires so your grip is gonna be crap. Try to avoid panicking when you hit a slick spot. It's like quicksand, panicking and slamming the brake only makes it worse.

LOL I lived in Austin for seven years. I remember school getting called one day because we got a coating of ice. I think it was gone by lunchtime. I've lived in the northeast now since 1994, where weeks of single digit temperatures are just the norm this time of year. It's kinda funny how one of life's little inconveniences in one part of the country can be cause for a total shutdown elsewhere.
As for driving, if you can avoid it and you're not comfortable, just stay in. Otherwise, slow and steady wins the race. Give yourself plenty of stopping distance between you and the other cars, and if you're uncertain whether or not you'll be able to stop, lightly pump your brakes well ahead of where you'll need to stop so that you have ample time to slow down. Sudden stops are gonna send you sliding, and given the likelihood that you're driving on all-seasons at best around a bunch of others in the same boat, you may as well just get your insurance agent on speakerphone.

I'd say just avoid driving if you can. I usually call out of work anytime there is a significant amount of snow. My normal commute is almost an hour so I don't even bother when it comes to snow.

were expecting 6-8 inches from the Texas storm tonight and tomorrow, and then Wednesday and Thursday another round of even heavier precipitation.
We haven't had a nice snow in at least 5 years, that being said we've had a couple of small snows (less than an inch) since January and a big icing this past week (half inch) on wednesday..my towns roads are still looking like a skating rink.
in southern Missouri we usually just get ice and especially for me because i'm like 5 miles from the Mississippi river , so snow is nice.
Ol Mr. Groundhog sure wasnt lying

other than driving slowly and cautiously as you probably don't have heavy grip tires, and wearing an extra layer for heat, there's nothing major you need to consider.

Here in Virginia we like to buy all the milk, bread and eggs to last a month or so. And then when we must go out, we like to make sure we dont clean the snow off our cars and drive EXACTLY like normal or pretend you're letting a turtle win a race to help his self esteem, absolutely no middle ground. And whatever you do make sure to take hundreds of photos of the tiny amount of snow and post them literally everywhere because I promise none of your neighbors or friends will be able to see the snow on their own.

Welcome to my life. We have lots of road treatments around where I live so we get around but I’d advise get your supplies and stay off the road for a while down there because people don’t know how to drive in it and I’m sure the municipalities down there won’t have the salt and sand needed to help make roads safe

I am jealous that yall have infrastructure in place to handle these things. I literally see no road in front of my home. Texas has no snow plows down here. Plus the state didn't plan well enough that energy is running out, so they have resorted to rolling blackouts for electricity since 1 am last night, to continue through tomorrow. yay Texas

I live on Vancouver Island in Canada and we hardly get snow but when we do it sends people into a frenzy. People forget how to drive, plows don't always come by, it's chaos! All you can do is take er easy and slow. How do you not have power? That's kinda ridiculous. Stay safe y'all.

A family I know moved to El Paso last week and they were going on and on saying how they won't have to deal with snow anymore. Ha! We're getting a foot of snow here in Chicago today. If you drive, just watch out for all of us holding onto your bumper as we skitch down the street!
