So for the last 5 years or so my father-in-law has had it pretty hard. He had quadruple bypass surgery then an year or two ago he had pneumonia and was hospitalized from Thanksgiving until mid Dec. he was then taken to a rehab hospital, but the next day they sent him back to the first hospital, because they had found out he had fallen at the first hospital and hit his head. So he had to have emergency brain surgery and was there until the end of January. Then he went back to a rehab hospital for a couple months. But it was determined that his lungs were only working at 35-40% capacity so he’s been on oxygen 24/7 ever since. Well, he went back into the hospital last Tuesday (9 or 10 days ago) and this morning the doctor called and said his lungs are so weak and bad that they need to make a decision to either put him in a home on a ventilator or just to let him go naturally. My wife, mother-in-law and brother-in-law have an appointment with the hospital tomorrow morning to give them a decision.

My dad was in BAD shape (self induced) about a 10 years ago. He was an intravenous drug user, ended up with aids, and was dying of a host of issues, pneumonia included. His lungs were were being controlled by a ventilator and he wasn't waking up. I was the one who made the decision. It's tough. Very. I told myself that there were other sick people with higher odds that needed that bed and the doctor's attention to get better. I couldn't help my dad, but I might be able to help someone else's.
Your wife and her family will make the right decision in their situation either way, but both will come with feelings of guilt. Be there for her. She'll need it.
Stay strong.

Oh mate, I'm so sorry to hear that. I feel so bad for him as it sounds as if he's had a seriously bad time the past few years and it must be so exhausting for him and for your family. I hope whatever decision is made both he and your family find peace and comfort from it. Sending you all the luck in the world.

Thanks everyone. And here’s an update. They went to the meeting this morning with the doctor and now have a plan in place for when it’s enough. But that said the doctor feels he’s actually been much better yesterday and today. Especially compared to how he last week. We also found out today that he had slipped into a coma on his second day at the rehab hospital earlier in the week because of too much carbon monoxide in his lungs. And that was why he was sent back to this hospital the day before yesterday.
So come Monday when the doctor knows more the plan is as of now he will have to go to another rehab hospital for a more extensive rehab (month - six weeks) but if he starts failing again the plan is set that they are to do whatever the can to save him up until he would need to be on a ventilator. So do not resuscitate or incubate. So that’s where we are at.
Thanks again for the well wishes and prayers.
