Backlash was just something concocted by fans hopeful for a continuation of No Mercy. There was zero mention of it in Gamepro's big wrestling game cover story in 2001. Anyway, by the time the WWE GameCube games were coming out key AKI personnel were working for Yuke's. So-for better or worse-the Day of Reckoning/Wrestle Kingdom engine is the closest thing we're going to get from a company trying to replicate the classic AKI gameplay. Sanders actually mentions in the PWX interview that they didn't have key-AKI devs working with them and that it was something THQ told him to say in interviews to kind of curb the backlash (pardon the pun) that they got when they decided to move forward without AKI. I was kind of floored to find that out, it's super scummy on the part of THQ. Wow, had no idea that was just a PR spin.

The only one I remember being started got shelved a month or two later and the guy worked on a different mod entirely. It's a shame. I think creating the 2001 roster on it would be lots of fun Someone did make a No Mercy mod based on 2001, it's called WWF Invasion and it came out 10 years ago.

I’ve been looking into some of these mods, and I wish someone could put together something more updated that was customizable

You get the feeling of playing the 64 but with all the enhancements of the pc mods.
