Anybody know of anything the Cubs might be doing today? frontrunners along with the red sox for gagne, apparently... but who knows. hendry will keep quiet until 5 minutes until the deadline, and then will pull something out of his ass if we actually do something. although if pie and marmol are involved, i really would rather go closer by whoever the for the rest of the season. i dont want to trade for gagne, dominant when healthy or not, for our #1 prospect and closer of the future... sorry, but he's as much as a risk as dempster when you factor in health and whatnot going forward. as close as we are in a terrible national league, i'd rather stick with dempster as our closer, with howry and **possibly** wood (if he can remain healthy and effective long enough, but the two asterics obviously shows how little of a possibility i think that is) as backups...

The Proctor deal is a deal a team with an 8 game lead would make, not the other way around. Betemit is good insurance for A-Rod leaving and off the bench but its strange right now.

The Braves are making a push to get one of the better starting pitchers available. They're willing to give up pitching prospect Jo-Jo Reyes to get Bronson Arroyo. My guess is that Reyes alone would not be enough; the Braves might have to dip into the farm system and pull out another prospect.

ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Eric Gagne chase is down to the Red Sox and Brewers. He'd have to waive his no-trade clause to go to Boston, whereas the Brewers don't have to worry about that. Speculation is that the Red Sox are offering Kason Gabbard and David Murphy. The Brewers could part with Tony Gwynn Jr. and a pitcher. Both of those outfielders project as long-term reserves, but they could get a chance to start in center if acquired by Texas.

The Red Sox and Rangers have agreed to an Eric Gagne deal, pending Gagne waiving his no-trade clause, sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
If its for Kason Gabbard and David Murphy, than YAHTZEE!

I don't know why Boston would do that deal...Kason Gabbard proved to be a decent 5th starter and they're giving him away for Gagne, who's only going to be there for 2 or 3 months. I guess it works since they're trying to win a Championship this year, but I'm glad the Yankees backed off on pursuing him.

Kason Gabbard is a future 4th or 5th starter, and David Murphy is in a log jam in the OF.
Why wouldnt you do that deal?
Thats if he waives the NTC

why wouldn't they do that deal? Seriously? Gabbard has to rank behind Bowden, Buchholz, Lester, and David Murphy ing blows... if Gagne waives his no trade clause and that's all they gave up, that's a complete and utter steal. If the Brewers could have gotten him for Tony Gwynn Jr and minor league pitching, that would've been a steal too... I don't know what Texas sees in reserve center fielders, but go figure.

David Murphy is the 3rd best OF in Pawtucket right now, behind Moss and Ellsbury. He'd be a poor mans Trot Nixon, but mainly a 4th OF type, Brandon Moss would have been a better long term starter project.

Bronson Arroyo sucks big time, he really was a fluke and hes now making 11+ a year, he was fantastic at like 3-5$ million but now hes just a poor mans Eric Milton.

as aaron rowand put it, "we're dropping like flies." Definitely not the right time for injuries but for some reason we keep winning. Pat Burrell has really stepped it up in july.
