Who was the first wrestler to use theme music?


For years, I've heard from stars such as The Freebirds, Hulk Hogan, & Sgt. Slaughter all take credit for being the first. And I've even heard credit being given to Gorgeous George as being the first.

I've always assumed it really was the Freebirds since music was always a part of their gimmick. I could be wrong though.

Hulk Hogan would like for us to believe he was the first man to walk on the moon, so not sure if I'd take his word for it.

Slaughter claims to have given the idea to Vince McMahon SR, during Slaughter's WWWF debut. I dunno, maybe he did?



So is there a definitive answer out there or just more guesses & speculation?

I always thought it was Gorgeous George...if we're talking on a national level I'd say Slaughter's debut in the you're talking about the firs to use "current music" Freebirds

I always figured it depended on what territory they were talking. The Sarge was the first for the WWWF, Freebirds were the first in Texas.

Same here, I once listened to an interview with Lanny Poffo, and he said that Macho Man took his music from Gorgeous George.
