Seriously, what made Vince think that Shane Douglas would be good in the "Dean" gimmick? This is the man who threw down the NWA Title in one of the most memorable pro wrestling moments ever, and his "Franchise" gimmick was great in ECW. Vince then brings him in, and makes him the "Dean?" This was the guy who literally kick-started ECW. I'm not saying that he would have been a WWF main eventer(though I think he could have been), but he could have atleast made a great run in the mid-card as Shane"The Franchise" Douglas. And considering that 1995 was seriously lacking some credible guys, using Shane right would have helped that problem a bit and maybe he would have stayed in 1996 and feuded w/ HBK.
Anyone else feel Vince screwed up w/ Shane?

He flopped. He just really sucked in WWF in the ring.

It was the era of dumb occupations: dentists, college dean, plumbers, hog farmers, hockey players etc. No real reason

Dean Douglas is just another wrestler on the list of "Kliq killed careers".

Douglas got the gimmick because he had a teaching degree. It's the same way that Steve Keirn got the Skinner gimmick because he actually hunts gators

This match was the beginning of the end for him. He wasn't very good in a WWF ring and was soon after shown the door. Always loved him in ECW though.

I am a huge Shane Douglas fan, but he really didn't do well in the WWE at all. Maybe it's cause he couldn't handle not being the main guy in a federation, or maybe he was just more content being the big fish in a small pond like he was in ECW, but he just didn't do well at all in the WWE then.
As for the Kliq killing his WWE stay. That isn't true. Scott Hall said before that the Kliq welcomed Shane into their group. But because Shane didn't wanna do the same worked match with Hall night after night, then the Kliq got tired of him. Shane pretty much screwed himself when it came to the WWE.

His WWF run was really forgetable, he should have stayed in ecw or wcw really. There just wasn't the room for him when he came. Too many other people fueding for the IC title. And with Diesel, Shawn, Bret and Undertaker in the main event scene he just couldn't have cut it.
It also could be a case of using an ecw guy to put over their wwf talent. Like they did when wcw collapsed.
DDP - European Champion NWO - Put over Rock & Austin Scott Steiner - Put over HHH then bumped to midcard. etc etc.

The Kliq had nothing to do with Shane Douglas sucking in WWF. They just said he sucked, which I don't think was a big secret to anyone.
Wasn't ever a Shane Douglas fan. I didn't mind his mid 2000s stuff in TNA, but I personally think he was really bad in WCW during his New Blood run. He was really one dimensional on the mic, and he wasn't ever anything special in the ring imo. Just wasn't for me. He could have worked as a mid carder in WWE during the Attitude Era, but no more so than a Val Venis or a DLo Brown type.

You know hindsights a great thing but at the time I remember thinking that I hated Dean Douglas I hadn't been exposed to ECW at that point but I thought they built him really well. Especially the classroom stuff on Summerslam I think it was with Razor.
I think the audience was mainly kids and who wouldn't want to see a teacher get beat up?

Yeah, WWE was just doing ocupational gimmicks at the time, I think they just brought in Shane Douglas because he had a good rep in ECW and when they saw him they just didn't think he was anything special.
