This might be off topic (in my own topic) but how the heck did Backlund end up getting that title shot against Bret anyway?

This might be off topic (in my own topic) but how the heck did Backlund end up getting that title shot against Bret anyway? It was part of Backlund's gimmick at the time, in which he was playing like a combination Alzheimer's patient/heel. He was pretty much walking around pretending he was still WWF Champion from the 80's and I know he put the CFCW on Bret a few times so it led to a submission match in the middle of the Bret vs Owen feud. It would be like Santino jumping in the middle of Punk vs Jericho, having him get a title shot with Jericho in his corner, and then booking Santino to win. Made no sense at all...

I think the better question is how the heck did anyone in creative think giving Backlund the title was good anyway? it all comes back to this.......from 93-97 Vince chafed at the notion of Bret being his top guy.nobody has ever came out and said it but goddamnit the evidence is all there 1)Bret taken out of title picture to feud with Jerry Lawler 2)Bret taken out of title picture to let Diesel be top face 3)Bret beats Diesel at SSeries 95.....but HBK and Diesel are on the poster 4)Bret given caretaker reign to drop it to HBK. #4 is the most offensive IMO.from the time Bret beat Diesel at SSeries 95 he had eff all to do...... Undertaker had him beaten at RR96 in a match that only served to set up Taker vs Diesel.........then Bret beats Diesel in a cage match that he looked like he was gonna lose because Undertaker interferes and costs Nash the match.......gain furthering their feud. hard to picture the train of thought here........hell IYH 6 was built around HBK vs Owen with HBKs shot being on the line-NOT the title defence.

Yeah I know what you mean and ive stated it numerous times in other threads that from 92 to 96 Bret was THE GUY but Vince just didnt want it to be that way for some reason. I just dont see why they felt Backlund would be the right guy to take the belt when at that time you had Owen, Diesel and Shawn who were all top Heels and were were soooo much better then Backlund was at that time and all could have been in that spot with Owen being the number one choice. I feel like no matter what we were getting HBK and Diesel at Mania but the fact that Owen wasnt the guy to drop it to Diesel is beyond me. He just didnt deserve it one bit. Backlunds reign in 94 and Hogans reign in 02 will always be the most pointless WWE title reigns of all time IMO.

Most of the booking during that time period was brutal. It either made little sense, or Vince catered to the wishes of his top talent. Bret had some god awful feuds with Lawler, Jean Pierre Lafette and Isaac Yankem. Made no sense to have your top babyface in curtain jerkers.

I'm a huge Bret fan, and I like to forget that 1995 ever happened. Just a bad year for him booking wise. When Backland was brought back, I thought that he would have been an awsome manager for someone like Owen. Then he started wrestling and I was like "WTF?"

Backlund defo had potential as a manager/onscreen personality but as you so rightly say,him wrestling in 94 was obscene.

OVERRATED:
1) Undertaker : yeah,i said it! my favorite of all time, but other than the gimmick,a lot of his years in the biz were quite lethargic,as were a lot of his matches...ironically enough,he got tons better when he started using the MMA stuff and submissions...
2) Randy Savage : definitely over, and a colorful personality/interview, but a lot of his matches had tons of weardown holds...and the vaunted aerial offense basically consisted of only an axhandle or elbow from the top rope...
3) Triple H : the Cerebral Assassin had a great 1998-2001, but anything before and after that was basically shit... now he just goes more on reputation than anything else...
Honorable Mention : Sting,Ric Flair,Hulk Hogan,Razor Ramon...
UNDERRATED:
1) Chris Candido : had all the potential to be a big star, and had some great move sets and characters...but bad career choices ( Bodydonna's, WCW-the Dying Days) combined with addictions took him off track...
2) British Bulldog : could have...SHOULD have been a permanent main eventer and World Champion....instead all the promotions were content with leaving him in the upper mid card...had solid wrestling skills too,but all anyone wanted to see was power moves...
3) Rick Rude : again, shoulda been World Chapion...impresive physique, HUGELY over gimmick, and and a vastly underrated set of mat skills....another guy promoters, for some reason, wanted stuck in the upper mid-card....
HONORABLE MENTION: Shelton Benjamin,Bobby Eaton, William Regal....

I actually think if anything, Nash is under rated as a wrestler, he really isn't that bad. He's had some great matches. His WM match with Taker remains my favourite WM match Taker has ever had.

I absolutely freaking LOVED the Backlund reign. 10 years after he was never pinned or surrendered he got what was "his" back. Showing the world that it was Old school that truly did still rule and not only that he got it back the exact same way he lost it. I thought the build up to it was awesome.

I think the only purpose for Backlunds 90's title win was to be a transition for the title going from Bret to Diesel. I think they wanted to put the belt on Diesel but didn't want him to wrestle Bret since he had just turned face and Bret was already feuding with Backlund anyway. Thats my guess

Underrated: - Triple H: Yup, I said it. He doesn't get enough credit just because he married a McMahon.
- Barry Windham: Never understood how he didn't become NWA/wCw Champion at some point.
- Lex Luger: I know he wasn't great in the ring but he wasn't nearly as bad as people make him out to be.
Overrated:- The Rock: I've always like the Rock but his mic skills heavily outweigh his ring skills.
- Ric Flair: He is a legend but his ring skills haven't changed in 30 years.
- Hulk Hogan: Even as a little kid I never got the apeal. Friends thought I was crazy, but I just couldn't get into his character. Still can't.

I might do an Overrrated list later, but for now its easier for me to think of my Underrated List.
Underrated 1. Goldust- Not only did the Goldust character break barriers and, in my opinion, was really the tip of the "Attitude" iceberg, he was a solid wrestler as well, especially in his initial run. He had good matches with HBK, Razor, Triple H, even Marc Mero. His character always had you glued to the screen, and he was a solid IC champion for half of 1996.
2. Marty Jannetty- If Jannetty had been able to keep his personal demons in check, I think he could have had great success in the WWF as a singles. I dont think he would have reached the levels of Shawn Michaels, but we could have seen the Rockers feud done right, which I think would have done wonders for him, and possibly even have been a stalwart in the IC title picture in the early 90s. The matches he did have with HBK were very good. He was always over with the crowd every time he came back to the company, and was a solid wrestler. Plus, up until late in their run, he really carried the Rockers team in the ring.
3. Doink- the "evil clown" Matt Bourne portrayed was awesome. Go watch the Best of Raw DVDs and tell me you dont want to watch every segment hes involved in. I thought the character could have been much more. His face run sucked, but as a heel I thought he was highly entertaining and a good wrestler to boot. He was really one of the workhorses in his time and had good matches with Mr. Perfect, the aforementioned Jannety, even his matches with Crush werent awful. Very underrated character in my book.

As the #1 Tyler Black Fan i disagree with that statement sir! ;D You guys have really hit the nail on the head with almost everybody but there is one man i would add to the the Underrated list Taka Michinoku. The guy was awesome in the ring, and i believe it was Mick Foley who said if talent alone was used to determine who got the title Taka would have been world champ. Apart from being the light heavyweight champion he really didnt do much in the WWF, He ended up being stuck in the crappy (but hilarious) Kai En Tai angle.
