I know this has probably been covered before but its on my mind from watching Youtube videos of Mr. Perfect the past hour and its bothering me... I have two favorite wrestlers. Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect. I think they are easily the greatest wrestlers of all time (imo). I can watch Hart/Perfect matches all day long. To me, they never made a mistake and did everything in the ring perfectly excellent. I said that to say this...Mr. Perfect died of a cocaine overdose way too young in 2003 and I think it sucks. They cover it briefly in his DVD but it still bums me out. I guess some guys you know are party crazy and drug users and others you would never expect. I never expected Curt Hennig to die of a drug overdose. Do you think his family knew about his drug use? Do you think his friends knew? I wish someone could have got him some help. I miss Mr. Perfect.

Not to split hairs but i think it was a bad reaction to cocaine rather than an overdose.
I suppose his friends would have known but it probably was accepted as part of the culture.
i know how you feel about missing him, i was watching some old Raws and it had Ravishing Rick Rude as the "insurance" for DX and got me thinking what a terrible waste of a performer. the likes of him and Hennig are guys that i grew up watching and it is such a waste of life. What makes it worse is that they both left behind young children.
RIP

There was many guys back in the day who liked to party, take drugs, pills, alcohol or whatever. I remember marking out at rumble 2002 when perfect returned!!
If u watch sean waltmans shoot interview it mentions the plane ride from hell and curt hennig in some depth.
See as children we were naive considering we would look up to these guys who back in the day were very colourful characters but have a bad background.
Look at guys like scott hall for instance, he was huge and it is such a shame that there is such a dark side to guys who like to take drugs and party but as we all know that it comes with a heavy price.
RIP

What killed him was Acute Cocaine Intoxication, it wasn't an overdose its just how your body reacts to cocaine, Hennig proberbly didn't have a cocaine problem and was proberbly just a casual user. Im guessing that Hennig used alot of pain killers in his time and muscle relaxers, as most wrestlers do, the trouble with muscle relaxers and many pain killers is they slow your heart down, where as cocaine speeds your heart up, I think he probably had an irregular heart beat due to years of using pain killers and muscle relaxers and then when he added cocaine his heart just went WTF and shut down. thats my take on it anyway

It is correct that he died of heart failure due to the cocaine and other stuff he was taking, and not an overdose.

Oh I thought Acute Cocaine Intoxication WAS an overdose...well whatever the OFFICIAL reason is it still sucks.
EDIT: According to Wikipedia, his father also attributed his death to painkillers and steroids along with the cocaine.

Yeah, I really miss Mr. Perfect as well. He was such a great character and it was such a shame when I heard he died. I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now. It hard to believe he's been gone for almost 8 years now...That's insane...
Before he passed away, I believe Mr. Perfect was scheduled to wrestle for an independant event Jimmy Hart put on. I remember reading somewhere that Curt said he wasn't feeling too well earlier on in the day and went back to his hotel room to lay down.
I guess that's when he did the lethal dose of cocaine....
A few hours went by and I think it was getting close for him to get ready for the event and they were trying to call his room and what-not, but with no answer. Then, they made the unfortunate discovery of his body....
He had such a great career, but a terrible ending...

Tough question, only his family can answer that. However, as you know, during Hennig's heyday, drugs were commonplace in wrestling. He made his bones during the 80's and early 90's, which was the apex of the cocaine epidemic in America. I can only speculate, but I would assume by 2002 he was just a recreational user. There was much less tolerance for hard drug abuse (minus steroids) in 2002 than earlier on.

yeah painkiller and drug use damages the tissue around your heart and weakens it terribly.it has contributed in one form or another to the deaths of so many.

I guess it bothers me so much because even before the internet you heard/knew about the guys who did drugs. Guys like Tully Blanchard, Marty Jannetty, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, etc. It was also talked about in books and DVDs but with Perfect it's just glanced upon.
However, with Mr. Perfect it wasn't that way. Outside of the flight from hell, there never seemed to be any problems with him. Then bam...gone. Just like that because of drugs. Sucks...
On a more positive note I'm glad he's in the Hall of Fame and they made a DVD about his life. Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart from King of the Ring 1993 is still one of (if not) my favorite matches of all time.

From what i've read people talking about him he was a loveable rogue! A practical joker who won the heart of many within the business.
One of my favourite stories about him was when he had to spend some time under the ring with Scott Norton and the Ultimate Warrior. Knowing they had to be in such a small space, Perfect took some laxatives, so it would give him wind and really annoy the other two!
However he took one too many and after his farts nearly blew the ring off he had to drop his trousers and do a dump under the ring, with the others close by, which made them throw up. Absolutely priceless!!
I know it's a little off topic but thought i'd share it anyway. that story always cracks me up!

I miss him too. Excellent worker love every match between him and Hitman. I was thinking about him and rick Rude the ither day...they would have been great in the attitude era. Imagine if Rude and Perfect were challenging Stone Cold for the title? I feel like WWE might have been building toward a Mr. Perfect Shawn Michaels fued in 96 after Shawn won the title, but then it just dropped out of no where. (Perfect went on to manage HHH, after turning on Marc Mero)

Bash, I have always loved they're Summerslam match were it seems to be so much heat between them with the tearing of Perfects singlet just a great match!

All the stories of Curt Hennig & Rockers backstage in AWA pulling Ribs on Verne Gagne are some of the funniest things I've ever heard!

Curt was one of my idols as a kid, primarily because to me, he was the closest thing there was to a real-life superhero. That in itself made the circumstances of his death very dissapointing.
