go from announcer to the chairman
I've been wondering this alot recently, i just can't remember, i may have been too young around the time it happened

He was chairman since 1982 or 84 because he bought his dads company but was an announcer back in the late 1970's.
He stopped around the beginning on the Attitude era to get more involved into the main storylines or or something like that - especially with Austin.

he had been acknowledged on TV since late 96/early 97 as the owner but started to appear as Mr McMahon after SS97........around Dec/Jan I think.it wasnt immediate.
after the Screwjob Vince was convinced he would be viewed as the sympathetic babyface that the evil WCW was trying to destroy......my God he was terribly wrong.....BUT had the sense to harness the fan hatred and make Austin his next target.
since they had already interacted in a hostile fashion it was perfect.little did they know HOW perfect it would become.

yeah i'm pretty sure the word was out when Bret was wondering whether to sign the big money contract with WCW or the 20 year contract with the WWF. around october 1996? could be wrong though!

I swear JR said something about him being the owner in 1996, I think I've read and heard that before.

I swear JR said something about him being the owner in 1996, I think I've read and heard that before. he did in late 96.JRs mike was cut during IYH Buried Alive I believe in a foreshadowing of the Mr McMahon character. |

They did a lot of weird stuff between J.R. and Vince through 96-98. Anybody else remember J.R.'s promo he cut on Vince about getting fired 3 times and then he brought in Dr. Death to be his own personal bodyguard and set up his own announce table.

throughout 97 vince was acknowledged as owner but still commentated from time to time, like when they were overseas or ppv.
