i would have loved to be at the pitch meeting for this.
"okay so we're going to hype the return of the Ultimate Warrior, only it wont be the warrior, it'll be the Renegade, yeah that'll put butts in seats!"
I've heard a lot of stories behind this character, like the warrior was originally supposed to be going to wcw but talks fell through, the cease and desist letters from the wwe.
there's also the story of Warrior outing Rick as not being the Warrior which led to the character losing steam.
anyone have any stories or memories of this failed attempt at ratings?

I remember seeing him on a WCW Fall Brawl tape I rented when I was younger. I don't know the story behind the guy, but honestly he looked just like a complete idiot. At least Warrior looked good at what he was doing. For some reason, the Renegade just looked like an idiot when he came out and everything to me.

I just thought it was pretty sad seeing him later on in WCW without the facepaint and wild intro and everything and yet, they still called him The Renegade at that point.
I don't think he was THAT bad of a wrestler at all. It's more the gimmick that hurt his career and it's a shame he thought he sunk so low there was no other way out but to take his own life.
R.I.P. Rick "The Renegade" Williams

Appearently Hogan thought fans would believe it was Warrior and then he could eventually feud with him and beat him. Either way...bad idea.

Appearently Hogan thought fans would believe it was Warrior and then he could eventually feud with him and beat him. Either way...bad idea. yeah, this is what flair said....he asked Hogan point-blank what he thought of the Renegade : " I see a guy who looks like the Ultimate Warrior." the idea apparently being the hope that being a Warrior ripoff,he would get the same fan support and momentum as the Warrior, allowing WCW to push him to the point where he'd be a big star in the comapny, only to feud with and lose to Hogan, thereby giving Hogan "back" the WM VI loss to Warrior is some twisted way.... so,yeah,he was basically brought in for one reason - to be Hogan's eventual victim.
