Throwing out a few different ones than Cobra Commander.
The Dark Knight Strikes Again (sequel to Dark Knight Returns)
Batman: Nine Lives (really cool Noir take on things)
Justice League of America: Tower of Babel (Batman ha plans to take on any of his fellow JLA members if they go rogue, and an enemy unlocks said secrets.)
Batman: Hush (bit of a weak ending, but everything leading up to it is excellent and definitely worth reading.
Batman: A Death in the Family (story of one of Batman's worst moments)
Batman: Absolution (ones of the daring takes on Batman, dares to make him somewhat unlikable, and kind of gets you siding with the villain. Very underrated one here)
Batman: Son of the Demon (Batman and Ra's al Ghul are chasing the same assassin, and form an unexpected partnership, reuniting Batman with Talia, one of his better/stronger love interests. Ra's is done perfectly here, proving in the right writer's hands, he could very well be the best villain to Batman. Check this one out)

Thanks for all the feedback, definately gunna buy Long Halloween soon, maybe ask for a few for Xmas.
Really liked Dark Knight Returns so will get the follow up to that as well. Loved how much story it fit into the whole thing although Mutants weren't the best villains and the news reports got a bit boring... Still a great book though.

I'm going to throw in 'The Cult'; it's a great little mini series dealing with Batman being broken down mentally as Gotham City is taken over by a cultish leader. It has a couple of weak points and is a more wordy, dialogue driven piece but it's a great read, has great artwork by Bernie Wrightson and it's a change of pace to see The Bat taken down a peg or 2.

The Long Halloween is by far my favourite Batman novel I've read. One that hasn't been mentioned yet, however, is Neil Gaiman's (aka. God's) 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader'. It takes place at Batman's funeral (after the Batman RIP storyline) and uses different villains/associates to describe their own accounts of how Batman died.
cool thread, there's a couple of titles mentioned here that I've been meaning to check out for a while now actually.

I just read The Return of Bruce Wayne earlier today. I thought it was great, I couldn't put it down.

I hated the Return of Bruce Wayne. Granted I never finished it as I couldn't get out of the first issue. It just seemed like mindless beating up on random people for no reason with no plot behind it.

Did you ever read the Final Crisis? This is more than just a story about Batman, it's an important part in DC's post crisis continuity. You probably just found it confusing because you aren't familiar with any of DC's Crisis stories, because this story certainly does have a plot behind it and it has a lot to do with the Final Crisis.

Mindless is the absolute last thing Return of Bruce Wayne is.

Granted I didn't get past the first issue because of this.

Granted I didn't get past the first issue because of this. He doesn't even know he's Batman though, he completely lost his memory. There's a lot more to it than just Batman beating people up for no reason. In fact, he doesn't even beat up a single person in the second part. You can't say that this wasn't a good story when you barely even gave it a chance.

I have the 5 No Man's Land TPBs and I really like those, a little different take on Gotham
Is calling them "novels" throwing anyone else off? :/
I actually do know of a Batman novel called "The Ultimate Evil" where he goes to fight child sex slavery,
