Hey everyone, we all know Hogan wrestled in Japan, but I had forgotten about this match. The thing that confuses me, with Hogan as WWF Champion (May 5, 1993 is when this match took place), why did Vince allow him to wrestle in Japan while he was Champion? Also, Hogan's comments about American wrestling, and even the World Wrestling Federation Championship shocked me. I never thought a great company guy like Hogan would go on record bashing the company belt. What are your thoughts? I've included the full match, and the interview where he makes the comments.

Hogan was never a company guy. He was all about that money money, yeah yeah.
If he was a company guy, he would have never left the WWE in 1993 to sign with WCW in 1994. Hogan has always been a self serving, only care for myself, hold everyone down, type of guy.
Though, I do know in every match he had with Beefcake that I have seen, he never pinned him after the leg drop, he always pinned him with just a roll up. So maybe Hogan cares slightly for his friends. Just slightly though.

Yeah I remember watching this a few years ago and being really surprised.
Hogan is in business for Hogan and always ALWAYS has been.

That's probably one of Hogan's best kayfabe promos I've ever heard him cut. To bad it was burying the company he was sent to represent.

I guess while on the subject on sorts, in a match from Japan, Genichiro Tenryu & Hulk Hogan vs. Hawk & Animal, watch what Hogan does to the camera man (at the 5:00 mark)! Very uncharacteristic of him especially since this is shortly after WrestleMania VII

I guess while on the subject on sorts, in a match from Japan, Genichiro Tenryu & Hulk Hogan vs. Hawk & Animal, watch what Hogan does to the camera man (at the 5:00 mark)! Very uncharacteristic of him especially since this is shortly after WrestleMania VII LMFAO He also slaps the camera away at 4:13. |

What were the odds of someone in "Name your city" United States ever seeing a promo of Hulk Hogan in Japan in 1993? Odds were slim to none. It was completely understandable, while wrestling was getting more main stream...Globally it was still territorial. Trust me, with the internet and youtube and stuff, you'd never hear Cena or Orton do something like that now days.

It was completely understandable, while wrestling was getting more main stream...Globally it was still territorial. Trust me, with the internet and youtube and stuff, you'd never hear Cena or Orton do something like that now days. It still made the WWF sound like dogsh*t over in Japan. |

I'll say it like I have in the past,  hulk hogan. Sure he's the biggest name to ever happen to pro wrestling but he's also the biggest piece of crapto happen to pro wrestling. He's all about himself and no one else. |

In that era you'd be hard pressed to find someone in Japan that thought WWE was as good as NJPW or AJPW. Its not different then in the territory days where Ric Flair would walk out on WCCW TV and say "Im here because this is where the best of the best wrestle." and then turning right around and going to Charlotte and saying the same thing and the same thing in St. Louis and Tampa and so on and so forth. If this was anyone else but Hogan sayin it people wouldnt care. |

I understand what you're saying, but its not like this incident was unheard of in the United States. It was a cover story in one of the Apter Mags (not sure which one). I remember reading about it at the time (I was 13) and not understanding why Hogan was trashing the WWF. I'm sure not nearly as many people knew about it as they would today if were to happen with Orton or Cena as you mention, but it was out there. |

I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind that but he played a kind of Stone Cold version of himself, including constantly saying he was better than Inoki, even when they weren't wrestling. |

May 93.....pretty sure Hogan knew he was on his way out of WWF at this time too.

Hogan's not wrong, the WWE title is pretty much just a prop. Bottom line, he lost the title about a month later and only worked a couple of house shows after. He knew he was on his way out.
